Do you go over-board buying gifts for children at Christmas?

I have never been one to go to the extremes at Christmas on my children. I do not understand why people will go into debt  buying presents for kids at Christmas. I would get my kids one really nice gift and then get them some clothes. etc. I know people who will max out their credit cards and get pay-day loans just for Christmas. Then it will take them a whole year,struggling just to get the bills paid off. I feel that the message of what Christmas is all about has gotten lost and it really makes me sad.  Jesus is the reason for the season!

I tend to agree with you. I don't have children to buy for, but I know my sister in law spends thousands at Christmas on her kids, only to have the stuff torn up or forgotten about soon after. the kids don't appreciate the things they get. Its all about the material things and not in the true spirit of Christmas.

I've got 3 children and there grandparents have always gone overboard for them.  I've always made it a point to get them each a couple of things but there have been some years where those couple things were very small and creative.  While on my own for a couple of years rather get them stuff I took them somewhere instead to create a memory.  Indoor water parks, blue man group - family skate night for the new year etc.  This year my husband and I agreed to get each kid 3 gifts for under the tree.  They are still going to there grandparents and they will still get bombarded (at least I'm not the one going into debt over the holidays) Last I heard dh told me was waiting for one more gift to arrive in the mail for my daughter.  Funny thing he said that last week and gifts have arrived.  I think he's squeaked a couple more in there and the count is up to 5 now.

Yes, I do.  I am a grandmother.

I think I can do that and still believe that Jesus is the reason for the season.

I love Christmas but I shop for bargains so I can the most for my money.

It's how some parents/people show their love. True story. Getting "spoiled" isn't a bad thing in 100% of cases (although I agree, going into debt for a commercial holiday isn't a smart decision).

I do have a tendency to spend a lot more than I intended on my gran children. But christmas only come once a year so I don't mind.
