How Do We Tell the Difference between the Angels & the Demons/Devil?

In the Gospel we read how the Devil tempted Jesus just before the angels took care of Him.

From THAT story, we might suppose that we can tell the difference because the Devil asks us to 'give ourselves' before he helps us (while the angels help us without even ASKING us to give).

But addiction takes us WHEN we take what it offers---our taking-it being an automatic 'permission' for IT to take US! So what we think is an angel 'helping us in a time of need' might actually be a demon tightening our shackles!

How do we make sure that our helpers are the former & not the latter?
