Foods to avoid at work
« on: February 16, 2014, 11:17:20 am »
I just recently got a job and we are allowed to bring in lunch so I'm planning on doing that as much as possible to save on the cost of food.  However, since this is my first office job, I don't really know what to avoid bringing in.  Like, I made fajitas with garlic and onions for dinner last night and I have a feeling people might not appreciate those being eaten.  So, do you all have any suggestions of foods that should be avoided in the office place?

Same question for snacks.  I brought in a bag of chips and worried that maybe they were too loud to bring into the office.

When I bring food to work for lunch I always bring something that would not upset my stomach. I would bring something that would give me enough energy to make it through the work day.

What kind of office setting is this?  Like are you in a cubicle or open floor plan, and do you eat in that setting?  I used to work in a cubicle last year, and a lot of coworkers would just have lunch at their desk, but I would go downstairs to the cafeteria to eat.  In the cafeteria, I don't think it matters what you eat, since it's rather noisy and has other aromas already.  If you eat in the office, I think you're right to avoid foods with really proliferative smells.  I always liked to bring a salad or a sandwich, and I really don't think a bag of chips is too distracting, so feel free to bring that :)  You could always ask your coworkers if you're still curious, since it's harder for us to know what kind of environment you're in.

Many work places have microwaves.  Microwaves are a big source of odorous smells not to mention messes that often are created when used.  I would avoid microwavable foods.  Plates and dishes etc. that require washing.

Whole fruits and vegetables are good raw and are healthy for you and do not leave messes if you eat whole and are not peeling them at work (not recommended).

What ever you "bring to work" think "no odors, no messes, no foods that will upset your stomach"

Apples are good (better than oranges - "no peelings") as you can eat the whole thing seeds and all and a "healthy choice".  Grapes are good.  Bottle water is good and is a healthy choice of beverage rather than coffee or tea.  Many disputes can be had over coffee or tea that is "often employer provided".  Including who drank the last cup and didn't make any more.  Who made this mess or that mess and did not clean up!

Who left this or that in the employee refrigerator (mold experiments, smelly this or that, etc)  Chips or crumbs left on tables, floors, rugs.  Juice or cool aid stains or stickiness.  The list can go on and on.

Just be aware and considerate of others.  Clean up messes etc. and you should do fine..

Think about what would bother you, and just avoid that. Maybe ask those near you if you have something that may have a stronger smell. As long as you clean up any mess, and don't make a scene when you are having/preparing your lunch it should be fine!
