Technologicall advanced?
« on: July 09, 2009, 01:43:14 pm »
As my grandparents told me a story today I started to feel very old. They told me of a time when they first got a home phone line. They shared the single line with other families, and they all had “code rings,” such as for one family it was 3 short rings, for another one long, for another 5 short rings, and so on and so on. If these things were happening decades ago, but they can still remember it makes we wonder what we will be looking back on, and how far technology will go. I’m only 18, but I can remember when my dad got his first cell phone, and no non else’s dad had one. I took it to school one day and it was a severe crime for me to touch it. Also when I was about 4, my aunt had a home computer, and it was way cool to have one. Now everyone does….
Can anyone remember things like this from their childhood?
Please state your age and story…
Lets all feel old haha

22...

i remember my walkman, and also remember my parents
having an 8-track and big clunky record player.
(i refuse to buy an ipod - i'd rather spend a quarter
and find an awesome record at goodwill)

i also remember rotary phones. you know, the ones
where you spun it with your finger. my granny had one
up until like, the late 90s...

i remember first getting the internet and the dial-up noise!
i knew it by heart, and could always tell when it wasn't
going to connect. haha.
[ we all have a place in history. mine is in the clouds. ]

This is going to date me as being old, but, I can remember back in 1974 when the West Coast got PUSH BUTTON PHONES, they were the talk of the era, people waited for YEARS to get them.  When we got our first push button phone, we all were perplexed on the star * button and the pound # button........."What are they for"? "What will they do"? "Why are there twelve buttons on the phone"?.......And now looking back, I realize how silly we were, because they are an important part of communication now.  But now, many of us have speed dial or voice activation dialing "CALL HOME".........and now I have actually seen that they are working on HOLOGRAM FUNCTIONS for phones (Where when the phone rings, a little 3-D image pops out so you can SEE who is calling you (like on Star Wars)..........So yes, times have changed.

Hologram:
 source: Online Dictionary........noun Optics.
a negative produced by exposing a high-resolution photographic plate, without camera or lens, near a subject illuminated by monochromatic, coherent radiation, as from a laser: when it is placed in a beam of coherent light a true three-dimensional image of the subject is formed.
