Anyone ever experience college burnout?
« on: March 02, 2014, 09:47:04 am »
It is the last thing I want to do, I'm tired all the time, and my grades are declining. I guess it is good that I'm about to be off for awhile.

Go & talk to a school therapist.  They are free & covered by your tuition & completely confidential, contact your health services at your college.   You might have depression, or just need to talk to someone to help you get over the hump.

When I was in college, I would occasionally get the college burnout mid-term.  Typically that was the result of being overwhelmed and losing motivation.

What worked for me is regardless of the workload I had, first I would make a list of all the work I had to do - assignments, tests, paper, activities, etc (both school and non-school related).  After creating the list, I would take a weekend day off - a Saturday or Sunday - go to the movies, go out dancing, be a "bum" and sleep/watch TV.  The day off gave me a chance to recharge and re-focus.  Then the next day I started in on the list.   Once I started checking things off the list through the week, my motivation usually kicked back in, and I was off and running again.

During burnout - very, very important to eat healthy, drink plenty of water and try to get your 7-8 hours of sleep.  Also, try to do some aerobic exercises 3-4 times during the week (about 20-30 minutes).  The exercise helps re-motivate you, and that combined with the rest will keep you healthy.  The last thing you want is to get sick on top of burnout.

Good luck!

When I was in college, I had the same thing from time to time and usually it was around the end of the term. I just remember wanting it to be over. I would just suggest trying to take a few break here and there, and know that this is not for ever. "This to shall pass"! Remember the end result, it will be all worth it in the end. Good luck to you and best wishes!!!  :clover: :clover: :)

Thanks for the replies and recommendations. The more I think about it the more I am relieved, excited to take off and have some free time. I've been working so hard on this degree / college that I have had barely any time for me in the past couple of years. Especially when I have had work on top of college.

College was a pain.  I hated high school so had to take a year or two break.  I did eventually complete a 4 year BS degreed but needed at least a masters if not more.  I get burnt out just thinking about school ...!!! It is tough ... !!! I am sure that any and all education is important and that the more you can get the better.

For as much as I have always hated school I have always tested well and done better than most but just the thought has me running for cover.  Maybe some fight or flight response ... lol

Just hang in there and keep at it ... wishing you all the best!

Been there down that although my grades didn't decline, I was tired and had hard time going to school. I know it's hard but you got to do it. The time off will help you.
