I have never been scammed, but have come close.  I went to the library to check on my e-mails and got one from what I thought was the Internal Revenue Service.  The e-mail claimed I had a refund of $694 coming.  I am one of those people who prefer to be "better safe than sorry" and called the Internal Revenue Service personally.  I was told that, if I had a refund coming, they would not be contacting me through an e-mail.  I also signed up for a book trading service and received an e-mail from her claiming to be stranded in London.  I wished the person "Merry Christmas" and found out later that her identity had been stolen.  My grandmother was once scammed out of $150 and that alone let me know that there are unscrupulous people out in the world.  Unfortunately, my uncle found out and there was a big mess. :bad: :bad: :bad: ??? :rainbow:

I fell for a few scams when I was much younger.

The first time was when I was about twelve and I seen an ad to be some kind music rater or something like that and so I send off my few bucks to learn more info and I never heard anything back. After they took my money I realized it was a scam.

The second time was when I saw an ad in one of those Penny Saver papers for small loans. I sent in about $60 bucks and I never heard back. Why I sent in money to apply for loan I couldn't tell ya - but I was young.

The third time was when I went to one of those credit repair places (I was in my twenties and still young and dumb)...I got scammed on that one by a business that was a member of the Better Business Bureau. I know now that the BBB is just a money-making scheme. I take any ratings from them with a grain of salt.

The last time was when we were refinancing our home and the company had us sign documents that looked a little weird (there was a lot of blank space at the bottom of the docs). Later as it turned out they had added some extra text on that blank space that included charging us all kinds of fees that cost us thousands of dollars. I should've known better on that one.

It is a shame that there are people who do this to other people and even take people's life savings in the case of Bernie Maddoff.

I see it like this - there's always gonna be losers in life who want to cheat their way to the top so it's always buyer beware! :-\

The one and only time I was scammed was for $10 for some kind of work from home thing.  It was supposed to be for training materials.  It was on craigslist.  Never got the training materials.  Tried emailing the person and they never responded.  I said never again.  I stick to things I don't have to pay for.

I know sometimes when people are asking for money on the street, that I am a sucker.  But most of the time with big money...I know....."Buyer BeWare.  One of the mystery shopper jobs I do is check up on insurance salespeople.   I check to make sure they are not intimidating or bullying senior citizens into buying or getting insurance that they don't need.

Someone tried, but I didn't go for. He was claiming he was my grandson, and was in mexico and need some money to fix his car. Well I knew just where my grandson was and it dang sure was not mexico..  So of course they did not get any money. Don't mess with granny.

Yes, I was nearly scammed. Someone rang from our "bank" to say they could come up with a better rate than we were currently paying. They confirmed our balance and when we last made a payment to our credit card account, they also confirmed how much we last paid. Then they asked for my account number and my first thought was, if you were ringing from my bank, you would already know my account number - I shouldn't have to give it to you. I hung up right there and then.

I do not do anything that requires me to send money.  THAT is how THEY make money.  And for me to make money like that I am suppose to scam other people.  I filled out a form for a free sample once and then later found out the site was in some other country.  I never heard anything else.

I don't usually give money to random strangers on the street.  My mom gave a woman $5 in a parking lot one evening right before Christmas.  We got in the car and I told her - I said you know she was lying.  But mom done the right thing.

YES and for an amount far too large to mention.  From that experience, I have been able to avoid other scams.  Learned from experience!
