I don't have to worry about getting old merchandise they always rotate and only order enough for the week. So if anything the merchandise is only a week old. If it is not very old so I just pick from the front and if they have very old even the outdated ones they pull them from the shelves they put it in a basket in the front near the registers at a discount price  So no one here has the problem of ever getting sick. I love where I shop I feel safe.

The stores rotate the inventory on the shelves, placing the damage items in the front. Do not take the bait. Look for perfect products, not damaged ones.

I do that with meat and produce. I also do it with dairy products. The good stuff is always in the back!

When it comes to items that on the shelve and not enclosed I always go to the back part as it is colder then in the front and usually has better code date on it. Cereal is another one I check. I guess it is each to his own.

I don't purposefully take things from the back.  I take the items that suit my needs best, if it's the one from the back so be it.

Our local grocery store just remodeled and they have the most obnoxious bully of a produce manager.  He has rearranged the bins down the center of the department so each item spans from one side to the other. That means that someone short like me has to be happy with the selection on one side or the other or run around to the other side to finish picking my produce.  I told him that it was better before and that this way is very inconvenient.  He tried to tell me it was better and that they "rotate" the items as if that was magically going to put what any one customer thinks is the best pick on the side they shop from.  ??? :silly:  that's absurd.  The point here is that some produce departments "rotate" their produce around so the ones in the back may have been handled as much as the ones in the front.   :-\

I do the same thing. I heard that when they restock new items they are placed on the back.

I absolutely pull from the back of the shelf.  I've worked in grocery stores and know for a fact there are occasionally items that get overlooked.  It doesn't happen that often these days but it does still happen.  For instance when I was in high school a woman came in irate over the baby food she purchased being expired.  We checked the shelves and there were a ton of little jars that had past dates. Just 3-4 years ago I was working in a wal-mart and was asked to leave my department and pull Lance crackers off the shelf... the had been out of date for months. Our teeny small town store up the road is notorious for having date problems.
