What is a ketogenic diet? I have never heard of this.
As of last November, I have been eating a 90% plant based diet.
I have never felt better. I also lost 19 pounds, and my skin is so soft.
I never count calories either.

A ketogenic diet is very low in carbohydrates … It is well described by
David Perlmutter, MD in his most recent book: ' Grain Brain '.
I started a low and at times very low (30 grams of carbs per day or
less) diet in February, 2014. Combined with daily exercise (walking,
stepper).

Low carb plants are a significant part of my diet as well, and fish and
eggs & healthy, plant based oils (unaltered), to stimulate brain function.
My reasons for this diet: Feeling much fitter and less pestered by allergies
and regular, seasonal infections … Keep up the great lifestyle :)  :)

I am glad you explained what a ketogenic diet was, because the word jumped off the page of your post when I saw it, and my first response was, "What in the world is a ketogenic diet?"  It sounds as if you are getting great results from it, and congrats.  I may check it out. ??? ??? ??? :rainbow:

My friend (who's son is also tube fed like my boy) is on it, but he's 4, he seems to be doing pretty good health wise with it. I thought it was only for children didn't know adults could use it to.

About 100 years ago a ketogenic diet was used for kids with epilepsy ... It works for adults as well:
I mostly like it because my sleep is healthy and my fitness level is high ...
SAMPLE of my carb intake in a typical week ... Also, I burn 3000 calories on a high-intensity work-
out machine ... 4 times per week. I would NOT be able to do that on a high carb diet ..   :peace: :peace:

Day 85:  -- 20 --- 20 --- 25 --- 20 --- 00 --- = 085 grams
Day 86:  -- 22 --- 10 --- 10 --- 05 --- 00 --- = 047 grams
Day 87:  -- 10 --- 16 --- 15 --- 20 --- 10 --- = 071 grams
Day 88:  -- 16 --- 16 --- 15 --- 10 --- 10 --- = 067 grams
Day 89:  -- 25 --- 10 --- 16 --- 10 --- 25 --- = 086 grams
Day 90:  -- 25 --- 35 --- 16 --- 05 --- 00 --- = 081 grams - ave = 068 :l  :l
Day 91:  -- 20 --- 05 --- 10 --- 05 --- 00 --- = 040 grams M -- May 1st

Does it involve coffee and pretzels?

It clearly involves coffee, even coffee with cream ... Please read the label on the
cream if it contains sugar(s) ... I love coffee with a bit of milk (counting the milk-
sugars as carbs ..)

With respect to pretzels ... In my case, I would have to go gluten-free - But a small
amount would probably not hurt .. Always read the labels for carb-content ...

My fav. has become coffee with a handful of nuts .. Nuts are low-carb but healthy.
Thru this diet I have learned that Carbs combined with Sugar ... imvite me to over-
eat ... and by keeping my carb intake around 60 - 70 grams per day .. that no
longer happens ... Also, I LOVE coffee or tea with a piece of dark chocolate, 70 - 85%
cocoa .. I save this treat often for the end of the day ...

I adopted a low-carb diet, after much searching for relief from long-term illness. But mine more involves a liberal saturated fat intake (from meats, dairy[butter, cheese, and at one point coconut oil but that proved to be a bit expensive]), and not so much fat of the plant variety (except that of coconut). Think paleo diet.

I will never go back to the way I used to eat. Every now and again I allow myself something that I shouldn't, but I pay for it.
There are certain foods I decided I could have again,  after I had cut them out of my intake for a while (potatoes, fruit), as a result of substantial improvement in health,
But then my sensitivities kicked up again, and I knew why - too much intake of carbs.

There are more and more (formerly rare) sensitivities becoming more commonplace every day - such as that of gluten. -Why? - Well, wheat as it exists today has evolved. It's no longer quite as it once was. In it's grass form though, it's fine. It's the grain part (particularly the gluten) that's causing problems

It was rather hard at first, because I didn't know what to eat. My diet had consisted mostly of breads and fruits and soy and potatoes - bearing in mind though that fruit is healthy, and potatoes may be - the jury is out on that one --  but moderation is key.
I think of it this way: fruit is not naturally available year-round. So it isn't natural for our bodies to consume a lot of it.

I get some flack from people who have no clue that there is a Huge difference between a low-carb diet and a No-carb diet.
My diet is not carb-free. Carbs are a necessity. But there are different types and some foods are absolutely loaded(think bread type items and commercial snack items in general), and people just don't realize it, or what it's doing to there bodies, and consume tons (as I did for years).

It's still hard - but SO worth it.

There are similar diets, such as GAPS, FODMAP, and, one used to treat autism in children, SCD (specific carbohydrate diet).

Hope this helps someone.
