buying bulk
« on: April 24, 2014, 10:28:59 am »
do you shop at stores that carry bulk items to save money?
I found that I can save lots by buying bulk toilet tissue once a year.
it is sold in packs of 96 rolls and that is sufficient for one person.
I buy 4 toothbrushes for the year too.

I used to shop at Sam's Club, but we have recently moved and I miss it so much.  I hit them one year when I got my taxes back and got something like 200 rolls of toilet paper, 80 bottles of dish liquid, etc to last long enough that my regular money could be banked for a while and it was great!  My friend had an SUV and I borrowed it from her for the day and came back with it loaded down.  Yes, it is great!

I love buying bulk. But we don't have a Sam's club near here. So I can only do it if we happen to be in a town that has one. There are some things I don't buy like cereal and boxed food mixes as they can turn bad or get bugs. But as far as toilet paper, paper towels, toothpaste items canned in jars or tin cans, coffee and such I will really stock up.

I have certain items I buy in bulk. I don't know about a year's worth. One item we save a lot on is coffee. We  purchased a Kuerig last year and although we love it, the K-cups are pricey. I found that Sams has the best deal.

I shop at Sam's as well. There we can get 2 18 count eggs for three dollars and change while a dozen in the store is running 2 dollars. There is other things we will get as well like some of the meats and such and then shrink wrap them into individual meals for the family.

I used to belong to Costco, then switched to Sam's.  It was fun and I had a good routine for rotating supplies.  I loved their book section.  Today I don't have either one in my county, but I occasionally go to Albuquerque and shop the bulk sections of the natural grocers.  Not quite the same thing, but that's what I first thought of when I saw this category.  I love to get herbs, grains, sugar, etc. that way.  It costs less and you can get the amount you want.  My local grocery store has just remodeled and started stocking alternative ingredients, but they're a pre-packed brand that costs four times what I pay at Vitamin Cottage.

I think both why is a good way to go. When my wife and I used to go grocery shopping before she died we would buy the book because it was cheaper than the namebrand product and it would jesses good. So I recommend bulk is a message you can get. Sometimes we would go to a warehouse store like Costco's goals and do shopping when we had a Costco card.

I buy bulk for the family and I stop at the smaller grocery store for items that will spoil if not use quickly.  Sometimes the deals are not as good as they seem at the bulk stores namely Costco/sam's club. For instance: toilet paper can often be bought cheaper at the grocery stores. Cans of tuna are generally cheaper. Frozen pizzas are usually cheaper.  I kept track for several months and never enter either store without a list in hand.  I have minimized impulse shopping to less than thirty dollars per trip.

I had a membership to Costco, but I only went once, that was over a year ago! I'm still using the same dishwasher tablets I bought from that trip.  Being a single parent of only one child I guess we don't go through things as quickly as a larger household.

I've considered buying bulk, but I live alone and am really low maintenance.  I've calculated the membership would cost more than any savings on stuff I would actually buy, so I just stick to stores like Target or Walmart and buy the largest packages when they go on sale to get some savings.

I can see how the Sam's Clubs and Costco's would benefit larger families - just not for little ol' me.

 to buy any thing I can in bulk.  Then less trips to the store, less impulse shopping.   I also love not having to come up with the money for things so often.

I don't buy in bulk.  I mostly buy for myself and i just don't have tons of storage.  I do buy extra for things i use as i don't like to go to the store for just one thing.  But bulk can cause clutter.  Hope all is well with everyone.

We like to buy in bulk. We have a membership to both Costco and Sam's. I like the 2 percent cash back at Costco, pretty much pays for the yearly membership.
