Friend is Arrested

I have a  friend who was recently arrested.  She's a Master Herbalist in town and has helped a lot of people with their health.  She's also a midwife and has delivered a lot of babies within the past 20 years and she ran The Pathway to Wellness Center here, in Cedar City.  Needless to say, I was shocked to see her on the inmate booking website.

According to the internet...she delivered a set of premature twins and one of the babies died.  She was arrested yesterday and is being charged with manslaughter and reckless endangerment. 

I think she's in trouble because she lives outside the box.  She's a healer--she's not a medical professional.  She took risks that I wouldn't be willing to take.

What do you think?  Should she be in jail?

If she is a part of The Pathway to Wellness Center, wouldn't she be certified to deliver babies? If she was certified to help deliver babies and there were  complications of the birth that lead to death I don't think she should be charge of manslaughter... If she wasn't certified to deliver babies, she should know the dangers of getting arrested and charge of homicide if something went wrong.

  A lot of times, one has to go through the court system to be cleared from further punishment. Pray for her that truth and justice will prevail.

it is wrong but she will have to go threw the system before she can clear herself tell her to get a good lawyer

It doesn't seem right.  But when someone dies, there will always been an investigation.
I certainly hope that justice will triumph.

She's a master herbalist ya mean she sells weed.Sorry been watching the show Weeds on netflix Fun but crazy show. Doesn't seem like she would hurt anyone on purpose hope she gets a good lawyer.

Tragic situation both for your friend and the folks who lost the baby....... however they choose to go an alternative route and have a mid-wife so I don't understand the arrest.  If the same circumstances happened in a hosp with a MD would the cops have come in and arrested him/her?  Seems not right.

I guess this would depend upon the laws where you live.  If she was a licensed Midwife and ran into trouble during delivery, I believe they are required to contact or get the woman to a hospital where there are M.D.'s.  I'm pretty sure these Midwives are trained to spot when there are problems.  If she took matters in to her own hands, well ............

My thoughts exactly. I mean they don't go and arrest doctors everytime a baby dies during birth. Sometimes these things just happen. Maybe the baby had something wrong with it and it couldn't survive.

Agree with BlackSheepNY, if there was a problem during delivery and she is a licensed mid wife it's their duty and responsibility to get mom to a hospital with medical doctors and equipment ASAP.  If she didn't and "tried to resolve the problem" herself, then........

I saw that story on Nancy Grace last night, I think your friend may be in a lot of trouble. Maybe she meant well,but things went terribly wrong. I will be following this story.

I agree with potluck6 - birthing twins offers a set of complications where singleton births aren't affected.  The couple knowing that took the risk of using a midwife rather a ob/gyne (I'm assuming in an environment other than a hospital)  2 babies = higher risk.  I feel for the family who lost the baby but it seems seeking justice in the form of this woman being arrested for criminal charges - manslaughter and reckless endangerment is inappropriate.  Of course we weren't there and don't know what the situation was and how things developed.  Please keep us posted on the story.
