Seriously considering Homeschooling my 8 year old
« on: July 14, 2014, 06:37:35 am »
I wish that I had the time and the resources to home school my child. My youngest of four boys has Asberger's and his quirky idiosyncrasies and rub a person the wrong way and I am always afraid of a bully singling out my 8 year old and using him as a punching bag or worse! I have had this issue in the past with my son and even brought it to the Principal's attention as calmly and professional as I could be and was till rebuffed as being over protective. I just don't want any little kid thinking he or she can just lay hands on my son because they know that he is different.

I don't know if it's best to home school to protect him or keep him school so he can learn to take care of himself.  It's a difficult decision.

I have friends who's son was moved to a private school because he couldn't function in a public school due to aspbergers (s/p?) He's nearly out of school now and I'm not sure what prompted the switch but as a teen he's developed well.  I've used home-school as a threat on one of my children.  She has completely different problems.  She is now in treatment for her disorder.  Because her father and I are divorced I don't have a lot of rights in the world of homeschooling.  Best of luck to you.

Sorry, I'm not a great believer in homeschooling.  I think it hurts a child being with mom all day and not their peers.  They usually do not learn structure at home dye to fact it not school with rules.  However, if your don cannot be mainstreamed did you think about a special education classroom in your school district?  Good luck with your decision, I know it must be hard.

I would seriously consider homeschooling if I were you.  You are familiar with Asberger's Syndrome and it is more than entirely possible that he would be singled out by a bully.  Children were cruel in my day, but what happens to children today is enough to make you regret any decision of sending your children to school, whether public or private.  I watch the news and I see the things that happens to children.  I would be seriously fearful of sending my child to school with Asberger's Syndrome.

My husband home schooled both our sons as he was home due to a disability and I helped in the evenings.  I wish I had found more of a way for them to have socialization but have never regretted homeschooling them - public school and even private school stinks in my opinion.  We didn't see any indication that either really cared about our children.

I know quite a few kids who were home schooled.   Out of 6, 5 are now teaching in public schools.  None of these now young adults was very impressed with home schooling.  They were involved in a lot of activities with other kids but felt they missed out on the socialization, field trips, just hanging out with friends.  The other one traveled a lot, so was in school part time and home schooled the other part.  A lot of parents are just not cut out to be teachers, especially of their own children.    I would be at that school daily (I was) until some changes were made, there is funding for the school for special students.  If you are in a very big district you may be able to transfer him to another school if you still get no help.   At 9 (4th grade) we transferred our son to a school that was more like a high school.  They changed classes and teachers every 2 hours, they had lots more stimulation for him.   He was to advanced for the regular curriculum, but they had no one to help the bright kids only the slow ones.  He had learning problems, but he was just not able to sit still for to long.  The moving from room to room made a big difference.  He was also able to advance in everything  quickly.  When he was ready for high school, he went back to the regular school, where he also excelled in classes, theater and sports.  Being in public schools he had a lot more opportunities than if we had home schooled.    We also live in an area, fr a while,  where part of the time because of weather all of the kids were home schooled, they were always so happy to get back with their friends.     It is a big decision, but one you have to make for your child.

Home Schooling is popular in states such as Texas & Oklahoma & in the mid west.    There are a lot of benefits, it's not just being at home all day with your mom.  They have organized classes that are taught by other parents who are enriched, so a mother who is a professor at a college might be teaching them a private organized home school class, say in Chemistry.   They are organized in events like 4H with other similar kids.    It's not as sheltered as one would think it is.    I know a bunch of homeschoolers who got college scholarships & are going for their masters & they seem more focused on studies & more well rounded/grounded then the public schools.    I see a lot of benefits from proper "homeschooling."

There are pros and cons to home schooling. Definitely do your research! It isn't for everyone. I know several people who are trying because they aren't satisfied with public school education system and can't afford private, but these parents don't have the skill. Check with the state for regulations and with other homeschooling parents to see what connections might be available.

Sadly, it is the way things go. I know that is awful to say, but it is true.
Kids will always make fun of each other and will latch on to anything different themselves to poke fun at.

Maybe you can find a special program with more qualified people.

Work really hard at teaching your child how to handle this sort of situation because sooner or later he will deal with it.

Home Schooling is a personal decision.  Think hard about this before making up your mind.
