Do you believe in God but not Jesus?
« on: July 22, 2014, 11:07:53 am »
"God is true, a God who cannot lie. He is truth personified. God is true. If that is so, then you must believe in Christ. Why? Because God sent an angel and said this child is Immanuel. This is Jesus who will save His people from their sins. Because God sent an angel, this is the Son of God, because God spoke at His baptism, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” Because God spoke at the Transfiguration, “This is My beloved Son, listen to Him.”

If you don’t believe that Jesus is the Son of God, then God lied. Understand? So don’t come with some kind of patronizing statement about, “Well I believe in God, I believe in the true God, I just reject Christ.” No, if you reject Christ, then you affirm that God is a liar. Contrary to that, He who receives the testimony concerning Christ, sets His seal to this, that God is true. You can’t say God is true but reject Christ. You can’t do that."

- Dr. John MacArthur

That is a huge circular argument that Dr. MacArthur is making... Since there is no evidence of what God or his angels said except for what's written in the Christian Bible (along with perhaps other non-canonical Christian writings), you would first have to accept that whatever was written in the Bible is an accurate description of the truth. But only Christians would believe that premise. And yet by definition, Christians are those that believe in both God and in Christ. So of course Dr. MacArthur's explanation makes logical sense for Christians, which is already a given by the mere fact that they're Christians.

But it would also be logically consistent if a Jewish person to believe in God without believing in Christ. Because the Jew only believes in the Torah, they may feel that what was attributed to the angel as saying was a lie or at the very least a miss understanding presented by the fallible human that wrote that passage. To a Jewish person, just because something was written in the New Testament doesn't mean that it is the literal spoken word from God, and therefore can still believe that what God actually says is truth but not necessarily everything written outside of the Torah as being literal truth.

And that it looking at a person that believes in the same God as the Christian God. Looking from the perspective of one that believes in a completely different god may still feel that theirs is the "true God", speaks (and is) absolute truth, and yet doesn't believe in the Christian Bible nor in Christ.

Anyone who gives  even a cursitory reading of the Old Testament can see clearly the multitude of prophesies that Jesus Christ fulfilled. So it is virtually impossible to believe in the God of the OT and not believe in Jesus Christ, who was clearly prophesied about in the OT.

How could you believe in God and not believe in the son? Since in the beginning God talk about his son Jesus. In the book of Genesis, before God created man, He said " Let us create man to our resemblance and to our likeness". Who do you think that God was referring to when he said " let us". who is us. He was talking to his son Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ was always there with the father in heaven in spirit.

I believe in the Father God, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  I accepted Christ as my Savior as a young child, more than 60 years ago.  As I grew up, I would question the Bible, not so much because I didn't believe it but because I wanted to learn the truth.  I would hear so many different interpretations of Scripture.  But I have never found in all my studies anything that would deter me from believing in God and his Son, Jesus Christ.  If you are a Christian and have a thorough understanding of the Bible (or as close as possible), you would see why there has to be all three.  I also know that non-believers are hard to convert because they believe what they want to believe so that they can be the center of their own universe.  That is why I do not consider myself a "Bible-thumper" or a religious nut.  I will share my faith if anyone asks or if I feel someone is ready to hear it.  I will write about it or talk to fellow believers.  (Missions to other countries is another story.  People in this country have been exposed to Christianity in one form or another since this country was settled by the early settlers, but people in some countries have never heard of God.).  Therefore, I don't believe it arguing with a non-believer till I am blue in the face because it will not change them.  They have already made up their minds.  I am reminded of an old story I read many years ago.  A young boy was helping an old lady across the street.  She was impressed and asked him if he was a Boy Scout.  He replied, "No, ma'am, I'm a Christian."
