Hoarding
« on: July 23, 2014, 08:37:26 am »
Yesterday, I got called in to receive someone who passed away at their home. I am not sharing this to criticize or make fun for that matter but that was my first encounter here in America. I am not kidding, you could not walk through the entire house. It's like up to the sealing the debris from all sorts of old trash, trash, and more trash. It is not a pleasant odor. How can someone live in such a way? Is hoarding a disability? Has anyone encounter someone else in the family or neighborhood who live in such a way?

Never encounter anyone who is a hoarder, but I hear it is a disability.

it is a form of mental disability the person feels a strong urge to keep everything.  it typically stems from some sort of tragedy such as a fire or a death in the family.

Hoarding is so sad.  I wish someone could've helped that person before it got that bad.

Hoarding is a form of disability, and it makes me sad to see people live under such poor conditions.

I saw this same subject on another site yesterday.  There is a difference in lazy and nasty and hoarding.  Just having trash piled up every where and not taking it to the dump is being nasty and lazy.

And champak97 - hoarding is NOT a DISABILITY although if it can get people a check and they not have to work for it I am sure they would be willing to call it that.  Heck, if it will get me $1200 a month and I not have to work I will hoard myself. lol

I have family members who keep and accumulate things. I helped clean out a bedroom for one once. She about had a panic attack because I was throwing out paper. A few weeks later it was severely cluttered again. What can you do? It's not right. Right now she lives in a already packed house and she recently brought home chairs from out of a dumpster. :-/

I actually do know some who are hoarders.  A relative of mine who was well into his 70's at the time and long since retired from work still had his first paycheck stub from his very first job, EVER.  He was a wonderful guy and I loved him dearly but what a mess his house was.  I don't think hoarding is all that uncommon.  I believe it may have to do with people being insecure and not willing to let go  of familiar things.  Just my thought.

I think for some it is a form of therapy to shop. I am not talking about the people that will not throw away a paper plate or a tin can, but other stuff, like clothes, shoes, toys, etc..... I think sometimes when a person is lonely or sad, shopping is entertainment, or a high. Then the more they do it the stuff collects. Like someone said above, I think there is a difference in being nasty and lazy and just hoarding things that are of some sort of value.

A lot of people live like this you'd be surprised.  I have a family member like this.

Hoarding is usually because of disabilities (apparently), and there are even TV shows about really bad hoarders. A lot more people live like that than you'd think.

my great aunt was a lovely person. kind, sweet and smart.  but she would go to yard sales and pack stuff and more stuff into her house.  she didn't hoard trash, like some do, but there was only walking paths in her home.

visiting one day, her insurance man came calling and she yelled out.."if you can't wade in, then i'll wade out"  lol

My mom is one of the worst I have ever met with hoarding. It used to be very bad when I was growing up. LIke others have said it can be a mental disability or a way to cope with other things going on in your life. I do have to admit though, she has gotten so much better over the years with getting rid of things.
