Frustrated with Search!!
« on: August 24, 2014, 08:49:50 pm »
OK, so one of the things that I have always done (but now enjoy even more since joining FC) is searching the internet while my husband and I watch TV and/or movies.  If it is a show that has been around for a while but we are JUST tuning in, I'll google synopses and character relationships and whatever else I'm curious about while we're watching.  Or sometimes it is pop-culture references that are before my time (or, just as likely, too new), or factoids that come up because of whatever we're watching.  I love this, because I would be doing it anyway, but now I can earn money for it, except...

Since 2 days ago ALLLLLL of my searches are coming up, "not a valid search."  I still get search results, but I also get a notification that the theoretically all-knowing algorithm thinks I'm just searching random word pairings or things I might already know the answer to.  I have tried rephrasing my queries, but it doesn't seem to matter.  Now, if I search TV or movie info, it basically always gets flagged.

Has anyone else experienced this???

Yes, the search function has changed and it is very frustrating! I like to search for random topics myself and most often it is something I am wanting to read about but the results come up inside the search page and you can only access the page inside that box and you can only read the first page that is presented. If you try to go the the 'next' page to read further, it shuts down on you. I don't like this search function anymore.

Yeah, I think I'll just stick with my other search providers and leave everything else for FC.  Seems like we get more credit here for videos and definitely for surveys and offers; but search is just not working for me.

I just posted this in another thread, but I'll repost it here...

Yeah, I have been getting a little pop up that says, "not a valid search."  I still get the page and the results, and I click on them and find what I'm looking for, but I'm not getting credited for my searches and it is driving me bonkers.

I get that message on occasion, too, and it is indeed pretty frustrating when I AM doing what I would consider a valid search...

I noticed a few things about what would not be considered valid searches:
-special characters (example: "Belén Rueda")
-excessive numbers and/or punctuation (example: "10,000 year old arrowhead")
-not clicking any results
-entering URL links

That's off the top of my head. There's probably more that I'm just not remembering at the moment. :p

Yesterday was the first time I've done searches in a while. I only had one search that was not considered a valid search, and that was "10,000 year old arrowhead."

I never bothered with the Search on FC because I don't want to download the toolbar. There are other sites that let you search for credit and you don't have to download anything.

The things I was searching involved no numbers or special characters.  It was things like "voice cast of [movie]" (w/o the brackets, of course) or "grain-free egg-free scones" "Who originated the term prevening," etc.  I click the results, except for the rare occasion when I'm looking for a definition and you can see the answer right in the description.  Even then, I usually click the results unless I'm in a big hurry.

You explained this well, and it's the most frustrating part of the feature for me.  If I want to keep reading the article, I just go back to the search results, get the url and type it into the address bar.  Then go straight to the page.  I've noticed that lately, a few of my searches are showing up normally, without the "box" that limits them.  Maybe it's a glitch they are working on!

I have not done searches in quite sometime. Majority of mine were invalid so I gave up. May try it again someday but I seem to be doing ok without it.

I had to delete the FC toolbar, because it was making my computer act up. So I don't have any experience with FC search. But I do use Bing a lot, and so far I haven't gotten flagged. I'm always worried, though, because my family also uses my computer, and some of them dont' know enough just to type the URL into the address bar, for common sites like Youtube. So they type it into Bing, and click on the search results!

Maybe they need to join one of the major search engine business, I will not call any names, and get the search working more user friendly.
