:-\ not sure, but I think I'd rather have a tablet.

I heard they both have the same function. There must be a difference, but I don't know.  ::)  ???

I would go to a store that sells both and ask a knowledgeable sales person (if there is one there) (and just because they don't know doesn't mean they are stupid lol) or do research online.  A netbook is basically a smaller lap top.  I am not sure about a tablet because when I hear tablet I think of an ipad and that is no where close to the same as a lap top.  You can not install software on an ipad.  Only download apps.  Which is not useful for school.  I want one of the things HP makes that is both a laptop and a tablet.  :)  Or I think HP makes it.  Pretty sure.  I saw it advertised on tv a while back.

I agree with countrygirl, I have both a laptop and tablet.  You cannot really load software on a tablet.  I would go to Best Buy and talk to one of the salesmen, but fot school, I would buy her the laptop.

I want a laptop also but don't know much about them. Research both before you decide.

If she needs this for school, I would go for the laptop.  They're faster, they do everything a desk top computer does, and the hard drives are much bigger than any tablet I know of.  As far as any differences between a laptop and netbook, here's a link that may help you with that:

I have a laptop and my sister has a tablet.  One thing I found is that a tablet does not have a disk drive so it does limit being able to do anything that uses a disk.

Personally I prefer a laptop/netbook because I do a lot of typing and I'm better at typing on a keyboard than on a tablet screen.  However, it really depends on how she plans to use it.  If it's for mostly reading or using apps, then I'd just get a tablet.  However, if she plans to do homework on it or reply to emails or such, then a laptop/netbook might be a better option.  Honestly though, it doesn't make much difference since more have similar if not the same abilities.

Do not go to BestBuy! Go to Walmart! Same electronics. Best Buy adds many adware you probably do not want and need...and they charge you extra for these.

a laptop would be better for her.  She will probably need to download things for school and a tablet or netbook you can't do that on very easy.  no mater what you get her,,,,,  just don't let her bog it down with junk.  it will slow it down like crazy

If it's for school work, I'd recommend a laptop over netbook and tablet.  As others mentioned, a tablet is good for surfing the web, but it doesn't load software and most likely wouldn't be able to use tools like MS Office (Word, Excel).  For homework, using Word and Excel will be more useful.

My reasoning for laptop over netbook is again, laptop will give you full function and portability, plus a full sized keyboard - vs dealing with the smaller size netbook keyboard.  Netbooks have limited memory and can run some programs, but there is a limit.  You'll get more life out of the laptop if she decides to go onto college where she may need stronger computing power.

The new convertible laptops (tablet and laptop combined) are nice - where you get the functionality and keyboard of a laptop, but when traveling or in a presentation and just need the tablet - you can disconnect the "monitor" and use it as a tablet.  I still find these a bit on the pricy side.  If you get a really good deal on one that comes with great reviews, you might consider that so she gets the best of both worlds.
