Employment After 60?
« on: September 06, 2014, 01:59:48 pm »
I am interested in your opinions on getting employment not only after 60, but even after 63 or 64 years old.

Let me say, first of all, I am appreciative of these online opportunities and I know that some people do not have other options...either temporarily or over the long-term...people with small children, disabled, in school, what have you.  However, after doing this for a little while, the amount of time it takes to make what I consider not that much money has led me to think about taking some of this time and applying for a part-time job.  My health condition is on the mend and I also miss some of the social interaction.  Interacting with a computer and surveys which lately have been asking me the same thing over and over, including over and over in the same day, is beginning to not meet my expectation of how I want to spend the next year.

SO...I have 14 years of recent, consistent work experience with good communication skills as well as able to show up consistently and punctually, able to get along with others easily, and learn things quickly.  But, do you think employers are willing to hire people of my age?  What kinds of work and employers do you think I should target?  I would really like a wide range of responses and will be checking back frequently for your ideas and support.  Let me know what you think.  I would so appreciate it!!!!!!!!!!

I think if you feel up to it and enjoy working as you get older...by all means go for it!!

We all need extra cash and its therapeutic too.

Do what is right for you. I know social security doesn't pay enough. That is sad after working all of that

It's a little hard to say without knowing what sort of health condition you are recovering from.  Also there are many jobs that involve working with kids that some people simply don't have the temperament for.  There are still some areas that utilize crossing guards.  Working in a school cafeteria is also great. Larger towns have medical transport that moves patients from one area of a hospital to another area of a clinic on the same grounds.  Hope some of those suggestions brain storm something for you.

Thanks to everyone so far for their support and suggestions.  I hope more will do so.  If you have specific suggestions, please provide them.  Support is good too.

I am recovering from something which has not interfered in either my physical or mental capacities of performing a job.

But what do you all think about the potential to find work after 62 years?

I am 81 and self-employed because no one is going to hire me but I need the money to exist.

Looking for employment is not easy at any age in today’s economy. However, if you stay positive, take the right approach, and have confidence in your skills, it is possible to find meaningful employment.

I retired in 2012 and after one year decided I could not afford it. I was fortunate to get a part time job in an automotive store. It seems that more and more employers are realizing that it's good business hiring older workers.  Older workers have a good work ethic and are very dependable.  8)

My best advice is to never give up. Just ask everywhere you go and everyone you meet for ideas.

I really enjoy meeting and talking with people every day.  The interaction is so fun.  And the extra money really helps.  :moneymouth: If you've the time and patience, medical coding is hot right now.

If you have any accounting experience, you will be very marketable. Seems like there are always jobs for accountants. Secretaries are a thing of the past. I should know. I thought I'd always be able to get a job as a secretary, but those days are gone.  :'(

Anyway, good luck.  :clover:

if you are able and willing, go for it.  Nowhere is it written that you have to choose one state of being and stay with it for the rest of your life.  People reinvent themselves all the time.  Ever hear of Grandma Moses?  She became world-renowned for her American folk-art painting--and didn't begin that until she was 76.

Have at it, I say.  The world is a much bigger place than most of us give credit for.

Thanks to all for their suggestions and encouragement.  I am interviewing soon for seasonal help for a large national department store chain.

My wife is 71 and works as a substitute assistant for the school district and has for about 8 years. She has no degree and can take off whenever she likes, but gets called just about every day. In fact this year she is on a long term assignment for the whole year to replace an assistant that had to take it off.

Personally at 76 I don't want to work a steady job anymore, so I do this stuff online for fun as well as extra money.
