Gift Cards ?- Son's Birthday 9/18 - need to decide today

 I'm trying to decide whether to give my grown son a gift card for his upcoming birthday 9/18.  That's what I've been resorting to lately it seems.     

I'm not asking what I should give him - just how do you feel about receiving a gift card as a gift?  Especially from a parent or other close family member?  Sometimes I feel it's the lazy way out but there are so many benefits.  What do you all think?

Considering that your son is now grown, I think letting him make the decision to splurge or use it for a need is completely up to him.  That's what being an adult is.

I think you misunderstood or maybe I didn't explain well.  I agree, if given cash or a gift card, an adult will use it as they see fit; no disagreement at all!   My question is:  in general, would you rather receive a gift card OR a personally chosen gift from someone?  i.e.  Do you think that gift cards are overused or the "easy" way out?

I think it is a good idea to give him a Gift Card, let him decide what he wants..Life will be much easier. go for it....

I think Gift Cards are GREAT, you give them a gift and THEY get to choose what it is...

Gift cards are fine as long as it is something he would use it on. You can never go wrong with cash though.

just to wrap this one up - I gave him a generous gift card to Amazon, he was happy, I was happy - and I'll do it again next year

That was a good idea!  Gift cards are so popular now with even young kids.  That's what I've been giving all 3 of my grandsons for a few years now.  I usually try to find them some little something so they'll have something to open lol
