Pretty much all fast food places that give you a free item it is buy one get one free.  And the item you buy is not cheap.  If you are desperate enough to need free food then I doubt you can afford to buy a $3 burger to get the free one.

I don't know about any where else but in my area and surrounding counties less and less churches are handing out food.  They have been burned too many times by people who are just free loaders.  It also amazes me at the people who want more and more free stuff when they have plenty of money to buy what ever they want.  Grrr.  That makes me mad.  And it seems like most churches and food pantries only hand out food once a month and you have to fill out a paper and show ID.  I guess that is not a big deal if you get a bag of free food.  They are just trying to keep people from taking advantage.

I also have noticed a lot of people don't want to go to a place like this because they don't want to be seen and people talk about them.  I am really kind of upset right now about this very thing.  People just seem to look for reasons to talk about someone else or put them down.  Or "shame" them on the internet.  aka run them down.

Ramen Noodles are cheap.  You can get a package for 12 cents or so.  And they are pretty good.  If you are hungry they are even better. :)

You might also ask at local restaurants and bakeries... Although the national chains will rarely allow someone to have "leftovers", a local place may be more willing to do something like that. I know that there was this one bakery that had made a deal with some students that had gone in and asked about their leftovers... At the end of the day, the leftovers would be bagged up and given to the students who showed up at that specified time provided that they didn't make a mess, didn't harass other customers (including panhandling from them), and didn't make it too widely known (so that others who could afford the breads wouldn't cheat the business). But I think eventually the bakery decided to give their leftovers to a soup kitchen instead to ensure that they were helping those who were truly in need.

Go to the food pantry. Sometimes companies will give you coupons to try new products and you can try for free.

With the Holidays coming up there is many places. Like others have said food banks, churches and many other things you may have in your state or county. Most of these places give food all year round. You would need to go to your local places or call and search to see what is available to you.

Many times churches will give food. I know my church has food for people in need on Saturday mornings so I'm sure other churches do similar things.

i am a big couponer and i have been able to get a ton of food free this way.  you have to pay attention to the sales in your area and in certain states they will even double your coupons up to a $1 when they are less then a buck.  they dont where i live so it is harder to get completely free food but it is still possible.

Hari Krishnas here often give out free food to people. If you're really trying to get some free meals, you might look into what your local Hari Krishnas have to offer. They've always been extremely pleasant when I've come across them.

Soup kitchens or food banks. At least with myself, I do like to sample food when offered at wholesale places like Costco, but I guess that doesn't count.

A lot of places are getting more strict and like the bakery started doing because so many people who can afford to buy their own food and cheating the systems and trying to get everything for free when they don't really need help.  I know a woman who was going to go to all the surrounding counties and hit up the food pantries to get free food from all of them and lie to get it even.  She gets some food stamps but is lying to get them cause in reality she does not qualify.  So it's not always as easy as just go to a church and ask for food.  I know a lot of them have started asking for ID and even proof of income.  Which I don't blame them.  I am to the point that when people are asking for money or food I automatically assume they are just scamming to get something for free.  I could use some free food myself and actually don't have the money to buy food lol but nobody really knows that.

I work as a mystery shopper, a lot of my shops are grocery stores.  I buy from 9 to 20 dollars of groceries, depending on program and then am reimbursed within 2 weeks to 2 months.  You are reimbursed for the groceries and get paid to turn in your paper work.
