Curing a hot spot is   usually spot treat (cleaning the area and ointments) then antibiotics and preventing future biting/scratching of the area until it heals.

You can try Petco or Petsmart they might have something you can buy.  You can always go to your vet, but then the cost will be higher.

I looked it up in Dr Pitcairn's book Natural Health for Dogs and Cats.  He says to start with a broth fast for up to a week, then slowly reintroduce solid food starting with the rice and vegetables you made the broth from.  Supplement their diet with brewer's yeast, cod liver oil and vitamin E oil.    Clip the hair around the hot spot to keep it from irritating the sore.  Bath with non-irritating soap.  Treat the spots with strong black or green tea.  You can also apply vitamin E oil or aloe fresh from the plant.  There's also a couple homeopathic tissue salts that can help:  ferrum phosphoricum and natrum phosphoricum.  Give 1 - 2 tablets (depending on the size of the dog) every 4 hours.  You can find them in health food and herb stores.    :dog:

I have been using a product called BANIXX which is an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal on my dog. It covers all sorts of issues not just hot spots; skin issues, ear infections, wounds and it is suitable for all pets (dogs, cats, horses, birds ferrets etc). It is really good and not that expensive. I got it at a local pet/farmer store.

I used to have this jar of cream ointment that was a sort of bright pink colour. It's used mostly on horses and livestock because they tend to get attacked by flies leaving those sores. I can't remember what it was called but it worked really well for dogs with those issues too. Dogs with these sores, and any other open sore, are like beacons for flies and flies mean more trouble. This pink stuff helped to soothe and heal the sores but also prevented flies so the dogs were much less likely to lick, scratch, chew or roll around and end up rubbing the ointment off. If you can't find this stuff, a salve made with activated charcoal might be a good option (the ingredients shouldn't be a problem because they're usually made with safe ingredients and the activated charcoal is helpful when ingested too).

They have products at Walmart that work pretty good too. They can be used for other skin issues too. My dog was getting some type of fungi infection on her paws and that med healed it right up.
