Yes! They are rich and homeless! They live in a car because they do not have a house to go to. They are homeless!

There have been stories of panhandlers earning $500 a day and some living in mansions. If I was homeless and a nice car I would need to sale it to have money for somewhere to live

That is why panhandling at highway exits is illegal in my city.  There was a news story a couple years back explaining why - and they interviewed a few arrested people who held decent paying "day" jobs, and would panhandle after work and the weekends.  They said they actually made more money panhandling than at their day job (high 5 - 6 figure incomes per year panhandling).

Guess greed will push people to do anything.

Well, I think the stories about the "rich" people making $500 extra a day panhandling make more interesting stories than the fact that most panhandlers are homeless or have homes but are living in poverty.  Perhaps some might recall the book and movie about Nathanial Ayers called "The Soloist".  That seems to me, having dealt with marginalized youth for a number of years, to paint a much clearer picture of your average panhandler than stories about the very very few "rich" people adding to their money through panhandling.

Also found this quote from an article I read very interesting:

“There are always the exceptions. I remember a story from a few years ago about a woman begging on the street who was followed home and discovered to be living in a lovely apartment with all the amenities. That’s the story we [as a society] cling to, because it alleviates our own guilt and apathy around this situation. But if people are out there on the street asking for money, they generally need it.”

See http://www.thegridto.com/city/local-news/10-troubling-truth-about-panhandling-in-toronto/ for the whole article.

I have heard of that happening. I know that some people that hold up signs are not down and out as they pretend to be.  :sad1:

There have been a ton of articles about this! Some of those "homeless" people average about 13$ an hour. I used to live in the wonderful city of chicago, and after reading some of these articles I stopped giving money, if anything I will actually buy food or whatever and give it to them check this out to see

There are scammers out there where ever you go but there are truly people in need also. I try to give to organizations that I know are using my money wisely.

I am absolutely aghast.  To be homeless for many isn't a choice.  It's a matter of hard times and bad luck.  Course there are those that have criminal backgrounds and drug/alcohol addictions etc... and there poor choices landed them homeless... however there are those that have worked full time jobs, lost loved ones, had kids and just couldn't afford nor have any where else to go.  It's pathetic for anyone to be panhandling when driving a new car.  I'm really getting sick and tired of people feeling as though they are entitled to anything and everything.  WORK FOR IT people.  American's begging for handouts that = more than a part time job can make is smart... (For an 80 year old who won't get hired anywhere) but come on... where's the integrity people.  I'm afraid humility is loosing ground for many and that's sad.

I would not give money to them.   It must be a full-time to beg for money they do not need.

We have a crew of professional panhandlers in our city too... There's 3 of them in this crew that will panhandle at several different locations around town, each day at a new place so that people don't catch on. One will drive them in a newish SUV, and pick them up at the end of the day. A friend of mine worked at a liquor store, so soon recognized all 3 of them since the store caught on and told their employees not to let them panhandle in the parking lot (she also used to have them come into her shop at the end of the day to buy alcohol). I guess that they were turned into the police after they had bragged at a bar one day about how they'd make several hundred dollars every day -- much more than they'd make at a regular job -- but because panhandling is legal, the police couldn't do anything about it. But after the news reported it, the store realized that their lot was one of the places they'd "work" at, so immediately instituted a policy of no panhandling on their premises.

That's one of the main reasons why I never give money to panhandlers... I'd rather give money to a homeless shelter, soup kitchen, Salvation Army, etc. where I know that the money is helping those less fortunate and not going to someone that doesn't need it or would misuse the money on alcohol, drugs, gambling, or some other vice.

yeah I have seen a guy dressed like a bum change and hop into a fancy car and drive off. He was driving a nice car and switched into some good clothes. I hate that there are people who take advantage of other peoples kindness like that.

That is why I don't give money for anyone on the street anymore.  I rather find a society and give it to them instead.

Hearing all these home scam stories is very discouraging.  I volunteer at a food pantry where we give out bags of food to people each week, and I have met some truly homeless people.

I'm not surprised by a lot of things that go on anymore. I have heard of eccentric homeless who dress like bums (I'm not sure if they beg) and I heard of one who had a tactic to scare people for fun behind a bush in a toursey area as a way to collect money and was apparently making good money (at least $50,000 to $60,000) tax free (or rather the person didn't declare). Of course I think the majority are homeless for unfortunate circumstances including mental health issues.
