I think the person who is more qualified in my opinion should get the job. Doesn't matter what your age to me if you can do the job and more reliable than the other person why shouldn't you get the job. I know most companies are hiring a lot of young people due to their educational background as well as health. That they are most likely show up to work without illnesses. That's my 2 cents on the matter.

I know I don't want to be 50 begging anyone for a job.  If I get to that point where I'd have to do that I'd just start my own business which is my plan anyway.

I would think they will want the young people.

I am 50 yrs old and haven't worked for about 15 yrs. I am thankful for my husband has a good job that pays the bills and puts food on our table.

It would be scary to go out and look for a job at my age. I already have a job at home anyways :) ,

Well somebody has to do the house shores and feed the family and I am not paying for that. LOL!

It depends on the most reliable person willing to stay and do the work

I want to say a more seasoned worker is better than one who doesn't have any experience. However, the downside with older workers is that they've been there and done that so you do run into you can't tell me what to do types of attitudes. They always know a better way - their way.

With younger workers, you get an eagerness to learn and try new things. They don't have a history, so you don't deal with attitudes of I've been doing this 20 years you can't tel me what to do.

This is in general. Of course this is not always the case but it is a lot of times which is why some companies tend to go with younger people fresh out of college rather than an older seasoned pro.

I think it depends a lot on the individual not necessarily how old they are.  There might be some general statements about age groups (i.e. younger people wanting money for partying, etc.) but it really depends a lot on the individual.
Too often I think we, and employers, tend to group people by age without really looking at the person and their abilities.

I think older people are more settled.  The younger ones tend to run off to get married, have children, or stay home with sick children.... That's just my 2 cents!

Frankly I think the job should go to someone who can and will do the job.  Period.  I know one 81-year-old lady who is a retired phys ed teacher, and I'll pitch her against nearly anyone I know when it comes to getting a job done--landscaping, organizing a trip, putting together a mission work team, sewing girls' dresses for a charity project.  I've seen her do them all.  Can she do it?  Yes, she can.  Will she get it done?  You betcha'.

The prefer younger now especially if you are want to work in the store or restaurant. They think if you are young, you move fast.

We have hired 4 young one's and one older, the older lady has had a littler trouble catching on to some of the things, but she is their everyday.  The young ones want to change everything and do it half way and are out 2 or 3 days a week. They both have draw backs.

That is such a difficult question because there are so many facets to be considered. I am fifty one and am in a field that utilizes experiences that I have built upon, have health insurance through my spouse's health plan, and have a proven track record for thirty five years. I work a second full time job, as I have since I was sixteen, so I will never be an unemployment compensation burden if layoffs occur. I have had one workmen's compensation claim in my life in which I had the hospital bills from the work related injury covered-even though I could have sued for over one hundred thousand dollars. I am cheery, responsible, focused, never late, and typically work forty five hours at a company that pays a salary based on forty hour work weeks. I don't whine or complain and adapt to change quite well. These factors may be part of the reason that I have held two jobs for over thirty years and am able to, knock on wood, continue.

Are you able to "sell" yourself with your resume and in an interview?  I'm also over 50 years old and I have a tendency to think that I might not be able to compete with younger kids who are graduating from college.

It probably depends on the job title and position.  Some seasoned employees have great work ethic.  Hang in there.

Have a great day!
