Mothers Help!!
« on: November 22, 2014, 10:33:58 am »
Although i'm not a first time mother I need some help. my 23 month old boy hates to get his hair washed. As soon as he figures out he's getting in the tub he starts to whine. when he gets in the tub he starts to cry and shake because he's scared. i never had this problem with my other kids. Does anyone have a solution that they have tried to get him to stop being scared.

I'd try a google search - somehow make it fun!  that's usually a good distraction!   :silly:

That is an interesting article that loulizee posted above.  Practical helpful advice.
I bathed my daughter in the kitchen sink for a while when she was that age. It was smaller than the tub, and she seemed less intimidated by the smaller space.

Thanks that was a good article the problem is he's not so much afraid of the bath it self it's just the hair washing it absolutly scares him. i'm hoping it will pass soon he will soon begin to realize that it's not going to hurt him.

Maybe you could try washing your hair at the same time? If he sees that it doesn't hurt you, he'll be more confident that it won't hurt him. Maybe. Just a thought.

Try to make it a game.  If you can somehow figure out how he can get some super powers from washing his hair, then he might be less scared.

My neice was the same way, she didn't like the water poured over her head, no matter how careful & slow it was.  She also thought she would go down the drain, lol.     Maybe try just washing his hair over the sink like they do in beauty salons.

Good Luck

My son was scared to get his hair washed to what I did is let him help me with his hair.  Get a favorite cup or something and tell him to make the water look like a water fall coming down his head, but when you go to rinse make sure he tilts his head back so you don't get soap in his eyes and what ever you do try not to put his head under the spot it scares them.  Make a game out of it is what I am trying to say.  Children are smarter than we think they are.

Use a glass to carefully rinse hair...  what a fun age too get bath tub toys or crayons something new and explain before your child gets into the tub that they get the toy after the hair is washed.. get a mirror and play with shampoo making funny hairstyles....Take a washrag fold it up show your child how to hold it so water doesnot get into their eyes and rinse slowly...My child thought she could not breath with water on her hair .

My daughter is 3 1/2 and she loved the tub until a few weeks ago she slipped and cut herself open on a razor blade. She had been scared of the tub until I started putting the younger one in the tub with her so she could see that if the baby enjoyed tub time, she could as well. She now enjoys the tub again because the younger one loves being in the water with her. I would try making tub time fun again. If you have a child that is young enough to take a bath with your 23 month old, try that. If it's the shampoo that he's afraid of, seeing someone else use it as well might help .
