RAP 'singers'?
« on: November 23, 2014, 06:07:06 pm »
OK, I know I'm showing my age, and I will probably get alot of negative replies.  I'm watching AMA on TV.  I have a hard time understanding how rap singers can make a million dollars talking.  I understand singers who have a God given talent and a good/beautiful voice, but seriously rap singers who just talk!  Anyone can talk, and I'm sure they can talk in rhythm to music, but they are just talking.  Can anyone explain how they can be so popular.

Rap was just getting started far as I know when I was a kid.  I didn't care for Rap than and I don't care for them now.  I mean they get pretty graphic and sometimes they don't make since.  I like being able to understand the words when I listen to music.  So even though it was a popular thing when I was a teenager i didn't like it at all.

I don't care for most rap songs. There's maybe a few I like but not many.

In general, I'm not a hard core rap fan.  However, there are some artists where their rhyming and style of rap delivery (cadence, emphasis, rhyme and rhythm) I actually find melodic (in its own way).  Sometimes more so than actual singing (particularly when the singer tries to be "fancy" with their melodies).

I think the rapping that are closer to chanting styles - where chants are not 100% talking and not 100% singing, but somewhere in between.  Those are the rap styles where I find some I like or are catchy.

Things like Will Smith's rap style (Parents Just Don't Understand, Wild Wild West, Gettin' Jiggy With It) - they were rhythmic, catchy and the overall song with the rap was fun.  You could also understand what he was saying - very important.
