In some ways I agree that sales tax is a little unfair in that those with little money tend to spend what they have while the wealthy don't necessarily have to spend their money so the amount of tax they pay vs. the amount of money they have tends to be a lower percentage than for people with less money. However many states that have a sales tax don't place that tax on necessities like food or clothing, so in that light are less regressive than a straight sales tax on all goods purchased.

Something that is actually good about a sales tax is that it will tax wealthy people that don't have a high income. Some b-list celebrities owe much of their wealth to their parents (or others in their ancestry) that actually made the money, and now these celebs can live with little or no income by just living off of the interest of their trust-fund. Similarly, some wealthy CEOs will take a low salary to avoid income taxes, and would rather be paid in stocks where they can live off of the dividends / interest on those stocks (or selling those stocks paying a capital gains tax which might be lower than an income tax on a similar salary level).

I don't like sales tax either, but it's been around all my life. It feels weird to me when I don't pay sales tax and I seem to wake up from the reality when I go to countries that don't really have one (or maybe they just call it differently and I don't notice).

We do tax here too.  So I don't think that is big of a deal.  But only on my opinion no offense to anyone. :)

I agree with what you are saying, but in a way I can see why they do it.  In the state of VA you pay little no tax for food and medicine and sales tax for clothes etc.  What I hate of VA taxes is the property taxes, we have to pay tax for every car you own, the older the car the less tax but still it is frustrating to have to come up with$$ every year to pay for your property tax for every car.

We had a local sales tax increase many years ago that was susposed to be temporary.  HaHa!  Turned out not to be temporary after all.  And, our little town has some of the worst roads I've ever seen.  Instead of using money to fix the infrastructer of our town, the city officials just vote yearly raises for themselves.  Our tax dollars at work!

Sales tax here is about 8%. I don't necessarily mind paying the tax, I just wish it was included in the price I'm paying before I buy...

We have a 6% sales tax in KY with no sales tax on food items (except prepared food, restaurants, etc.).  I know some of the larger cities will add extra sales tax for hotels, restaurants, etc.
Have a wonderful day!

Okay, this is a little hard to understand but are you trying to say that in the state or Oregon you do not have to pay sales tax?  Or income tax???  I thought everyone who worked legally paid income tax and I thought every state charged tax on tyhings you purchase.  Never heard of any state who got out of that.

How can they charge an extra sales tax?  The sales tax is only a certain set amount.  Individual companies cannot change that.  I had heard where some states were wanting to charge some new tax on certain things but it was not a sales tax.  Like in California the extra tax, not a sales tax, that is going to be charged on sugary drinks.  I cannot believe that was voted in.   I am not sure people grasped how much that will be.  For example a 2 liter will be 64 cents just for the sugar tax.  Plus the sales tax.  Plus the normal cost of the drink.

In Canada, it's 5% for Goods and Services Tax and then whatever the provincial tax. In Quebec is 9.75%. Which means I have to pay 15% more on pretty much EVERYTHING.  So I'd gladly take 6% if I could.

Sales tax is set at the state and local level. Some cities, towns, counties, etc. approve an additional sales tax % which is on top of whatever the statewide rate.
