Are New Year’s celebrations objectionable for Christians?
« on: December 26, 2014, 07:19:57 pm »
According to The World Book Encyclopedia, “The Romans dedicated this day [January 1] to Janus, the god of gates, doors, and beginnings. The month of January was named after Janus, who had two faces—one looking forward and the other looking backward.”—(1984), Vol. 14, p. 237.
Both the date and the customs associated with New Year’s celebrations vary from one country to another. In many places revelry and drinking are part of the festivities. However, Romans 13:13 counsels: “As in the daytime let us walk decently, not in revelries and drunken bouts, not in illicit intercourse and loose conduct, not in strife and jealousy.” (See also 1 Peter 4:3, 4; Galatians 5:19-21.)

I'm a Christian and I don't find it objectionable.  Some people take it too far by getting drunk and obnoxious but we don't party anymore so I'm not around them.  I just see the hangover the next day in some people. lol

Patti...i wonder if that person lived with you and had that hangover......would you object then??

Or a loved one caused a car accident and hurt someone else or themselves would u find it objectional then?

Get the point?

Of course those examples can happen anytime of the year.....but New Years seems to be a stronger reason for them to get drunk.....that being the case do you think God would approve of that?

It goes back to what bible says....."you cant serve 2 masters"

Jesus said many times,my kingdom is NO part of this satanic world....

Do you all have to be reminded satan is Gods enemy?

The name satan means "slanderer or resister"

New Years' celebrations are objectionable for some Christians, and not for others.
We walk in the light that we have.

As for Satan, he is defeated enemy. Until we know that, we struggle.

Paints it comes down to the very first thing Satan said to Eve.You will be better off deciding for yourself what is good and what is bad.Independence from or Creator.

You see the results in the world from mankinds beginning i am sure.We all have freedom of choice. We arent forced to obey. But Gods rules are for in the best intention for man.

You reap what you sow.NOT getting drunk on NYs might save somone a whole lotta grief for a lifetime!

In the book of Exodus AAron tried to compromise false worship with Jehovah.Playing both ends against the middle.Giving in to the Israelites for their sin yet he knew it was wrong in Gods eyes.Result was 1000s died for their sin.Jehovah saw in Aarons heart he was sorry for what he had done in giving in to peer pressure.Thats why he forgave him.The 1000s that died obviously their hearts were not in the right place.

Being bullied or peer pressure quite prevalent in this world. We all fall short and give in time to time even when we know truth.God sees the heart better than we ourselves know it.

I am a Christian.  We all fall short.  I enjoy a quiet new years.  Whether or not some might find New Year's objectionable depends on their beliefs and the activity taking place.

Hitch, you're making it harder than it has to be.

Jesus boiled all of Gods' rules down to two things. Love God, and love your neighbor as yourself.
If you've got those two covered, what else matters?

Making it harder??

I am just defending the Creators views of pagan celebrations.

You are right about 1st 2 commandments loving God and neighbor. If we loved God wouldnt we obey his views on pagan crap? And not decide for ourselves what is good and bad?

That was my point!!But many of us still try to mix saying we are christian and still do worldly stuff that satan has put before mankind to divert our attn away from TRUE worship.

Its wise to examine what your religeon is.Go read the bible and see the episodes Jesus had with Pharrissees!

How ridiculous! Read some history if you want to understand what Pagan celebrations are. Christmas was one of the first Pagan celebrations.

What was Jesus' main complaint about the Pharisees? Teaching the "doctrines and traditions of men rather than the word of God" ring any bells?
The Pharisees were binding up the people in doctrine and traditions, 'you must do thus and so, you must not do this or that, this is the way it must be.'

Jesus said, "I've come that you might have life, and that more abundantly."
He also said, "My yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Yep. You're making it harder than it has to be.

Dont forget also what Jesus said.....Worship God with spirit and truth and you will know you are my followers if you have love among yourselves.

Nothing hard about that!!

You can celebrate New Year's Eve in many ways. Just getting together with friends and eating, talking and playing games is fun. Or sitting home watching a movie.  :glasses-nerdy: Perhaps toasting the New Year if you're into that.

Anyway, Christians are just normal people (sinners) that have been saved by grace, you know.  :angel11: We know how to have a good time too. We're just more responsible about it.

So to me, New Year's celebrations are fine. It's the overindulgence that's objectionable.
