What is the logic behind having black eyed peas on New Year's day?

Black eyed peas bringing Luck.  I have never given that little wives tale too much attention.  Like so many of them it seems to give people hope.

I've heard don't eat anything with wings on New Years or your money will fly away.

I just eat whatever I want, which usually ends up being some form of potato.

I never really understood the logic behind black eye peas and collards for New Year's. It really never has brought me luck or money. But I do fix it any way with the tradition...
