Part of the problem is that employees don't have the kind of authority that a manager does.
If an employee refunded your money or accepted the return,  she may have been breaking policy and gotten into trouble.
A manager can override policy, but they should be able to satisfy the customer without making the employee look like an idiot.

This is absolutely true.  I do not work at Walmart but at the current time do work in what is considered retail.  People come in and want me to discount stuff and get mad when I tell them I cannot do so.  They huff off and go find a manager and tell them I am a b*tch and hateful and everything else and threaten to leave and buy nothing and then the manager will give them what they want.  And the customer gets this smug "I showed you" look on their face and I have to invoice the item at the discounted price.  "I" cannot give a discount but a manager can.  It's the same every where.  I have seen it first hand where I work and witnessing it at other places including fast food.  Customers are buttholes from haydes and treat employees like they should kiss their butt when they walk thru the doors.  The employees most of which are making min wage and can't get anything any better - what kind of an attitude do you expect them to have?  YOU may not have done anything to them but you don't know what all they have already been thru from management or other customers.  And it is not as simple as go find another job.  Jobs aren't just growing on trees.  And not every one has the option of going to school to further their education.  People who are not in or have never been in the situation cannot understand.  People who have never had to struggle just don't get it.  And I am not directing that at any one on here. lol.  Just stating a fact that is true.

I do not ever go there anymore because of what happened a few years back. During the Holidays, my  wife got a gift card from her sister who lives in California. She purchased the gift card there, when my wife went to buy stuff using the card, she filled her cart with groceries and went to pay for them and the card didn't even work. It was brand new still intact was opened when she went there that day. It took almost 6 months until she finally got the problem resolved. They don't really have any customer service when you try and call their help line. It's like going around in circles. So from that day forward, we have not been to any Walmart.

Unfortunately so many people do things to try to beat them out of money by stealing and lying that everyone ends up getting treated like a thief.  I understand your wife's frustration. But it's likely not the fault of the employees you delt with.

 ???

All these "horror stories" about Walmart and their employees I've never, not once, experienced where I live. Sometimes I think that a lot of people make stuff up just because it's Walmart and it's the "cool" thing to do.

I was just at Walmart to do site-to-store over by customer service & the girl I dealt with was so curt & rude.  Apparently, I came up to the counter right as she was walking away with her cart, she screamed at me if I needed something, uh hello I pushed the site to store button so "yes" that was pretty much a given.  She came back & pushed the cart into the counter really hard, like I put her out.  I already had my id out to claim my purchase & she told me to just sit it on the counter, actually she just jestured to the counter & said put it right there.    I almost asked her if she liked her job - but it was obvious she did not, her attitude was so laughable, she never made eye contact once, or really any other acknowledgement but if I needed something - not even an "i'll be right back" when she left the counter, nothing.  I was nice to her & polite so it was all just her.   Come on, even if she was having a bad day, fake it, Walmart is paying you to work so just fake it.   I worked at Disney in college & I know about putting on a fake show for the "guests" who pay to come there, even if you had a bad day you had to smile & be pleasant regardless while you were at work ("on stage").   It wouldn't take Walmart much effort to train their employees to do the same.  It really is all in the training of the company.   If Disney can train their thousands of employees to be friendly, so can Walmart.  Disney doesn't pay much better than Walmart either, so there really is no excuse why Walmart can't achieve the same result with their employees.

sadly i used to work for walmart and the issues is this .  we didnt get paid squat do really get a discount either and only on no grocery items and then add to it that you are supposed to do the job of 6 people and if you dont you get threatened with termination oh and the ever changing schedule that you can base any of your family life or day care around which you can afford anyway because of the lack of pay. i could go on but i think thats enough ranting from me.

I've never had a bad experience with Wal-Mart, but study shows that rude employees are a way to boost sales. A customer is most likely to spend more to prove a point to a rude employee.
Sounds weird but when you think about it, it works.

I didn't know Wal-Mart doesn't take books back. I have some friends who work for Wal-Mart, and they actually take anything back. Even if you don't have a receipt and even if you purchased it at another store...they'll take it. I guess it kind of makes sense about the books (because you could just read it and then take it back).

So when someone asks you to discount something, why not explain to them that you don't have the authority to do that? Then say "Let me call a manager for you, and see what he/she can do."
That's what managers are for.

Entitlement. I used to work at Sam's Club and my sister worked for Wal-Mart. The workers are "lifers" who aren't going anywhere else and I think they realize that. They want competitive pay and all this other stuff (when you look at the alternatives, they actually do). I think it's just misery at a dead end job. Wal-Mart usually has an older age range that they hire from (because of "customer service").

I don't believe you can blame one's rudeness on their place of employment. Rudeness is an epidemic, I'm sad to say.

Maybe it is just me, but I'm surprised that they too the book back. Most people can read a book in 24 hours.

Don't think they were being rude just following store policy procedures.

For the most part, most Walmart workers at the one near me seem like they are unhappy with there job, like they are forced to work there. If you say "Thanks" or "How are you" they don't reply, just ignore you. Very rude.
