How do you talk to someone you haven't spoken to in a long time because things were not good in the relationship?

Sometimes it is best to let the past stay in the past and move on to the future, but sometimes you still can't get things peaceful. So then you leave it alone.

Just be open and talk. No yelling or storming out the room. If you two would give each other time to say what ever without interrupting, that's a start. Or maybe having an outside person medicate.

I guess this requires humility and understanding. If people want to make things work, they will have to be forgiving and sometimes it could require a little forgetting of past events to avoid or minimize past wounds.

That would all depend on the situation. And it would depend on how the relationship ended.

You just start talking.  If you see them in public - say hello.  If you want to talk to them and are not seeing them either send them a card, a text, a message on facebook, an email, whatever.

It's good that you took time away from each other.  Just remain calm when you talk to this person.

I don't either.  It's not a secret.  If there are people you don't care for then you stay away from them.  If you are at a family gathering and the person is there then you are civil and you go on with your life.

There is your secret.  You can send me a check now. lol

Give it some time and you will forgive them because it's family, you may not forget but you can forgive.
