More than chicken
« on: January 22, 2015, 12:03:05 pm »
So I found this article:
http://zesterdaily.com/cooking/battle-of-the-birds/

It's just someone's blog post where they try pheasant, guinea fowl, cornish game hen, squab, and quail, in an effort to broaden their culinary sights past chicken.

Has anyone else tried some game birds or exotic meats? Ostrich, emu, partridge, songbird, whatever that isn't chicken or turkey (or duck/geese, but even those are kinda rare, aren't they?)

How about raising them? Anyone have experience to share? :D Kinda something I'm toying with, even if they aren't quite as productive or easy as the tried and true chicken.

I have eaten Cornish hens but have not tried any of the other items you mentioned.  My parents raised chickens  and I must tell you it was a lot of work, not an easy task.  Good luck if you decide to pursue this line of work.

I've had cornish hen before, and recall having duck once, but that's about it for the bird varieties.

My brother-in-law has fixed cornish game hen for Thanksgiving before and it was delicious. Haven't tried any others, but I would try duck. Not sure about the others. I think it would depend on how the bird was prepared and if it looked appetizing to decide if I would try it.

I haven't tried any of those myself. I just don't have an interest in expanding my food tastes in that area. Especially the duck. I have a pet duck and I just couldn't bring myself to ever eat duck.

I've tried cornish game hen, quail, duck, and ostrich before; the ostrich was at an American Legion when they had an exotic game tasting (even though ostrich really isn't "game" like the bear and moose they also had).

Aren't Cornish game hens just small chickens?

I was raised on a farm. We had chickens, ducks, geese. We didn't butcher the geese, but boy, us kids would have been happy to butcher them, tho. Nasty tempered little *insert bad word of your choice here*  ;D ;D ;D

The only thing i have not ate is songbird. I like it all. I am not fond of wild geese, but grandma raised domestic geese and they were good. They lived in the garden area and ate all the bugs. Boy did they nip you at times.  I really did not like going out to the garden. I have also ate all large game animals such as the deer, elk, moose, antelope. We raised domestic rabbits and they were really good. All wild meat is better for you . My favorite though is  a cow/bison.. meat not much fat on them and really good for a person. Wish I gould get some more.
