How much do you spend a day on food?
« on: January 23, 2015, 12:17:17 pm »
Just browsing links and clicked on a bit with a free cookbook for meals based around eating on $4 a day. Link here: http://www.leannebrown.com/

Which reminded me of this guy who ate on $1 (plus coupons): http://www.grocerycouponguide.com/articles/eating-well-on-1-a-day/

So, curious, how much would you say you spend on food everyday, per person?

Sometimes a lot especially during fridays we do barbecue. But most week days we eat left overs which is doesn't cost a lot.

Over the years I have seen food prices double and triple.  It seems there is "no limit" to how far food prices will go.  In our family, we spend quite a bit on food.  But, I have never sat down to figure out how much we spend.  I am just glad that we are able to eat and to satisfy cravings every now and then as well as to "go out" should we decide to.

I do not spend a lot of money on food. For breakfast I eat things like oatmeal. I take my lunch to work, if I'm in a rush it might be a frozen dinner. Sometimes leftovers. A dinner for my daughter and I usually costs maybe 8-12 dollars, and will last at least 2 meals.

By going to the local soup kitchens and food banks, I save a lot of money that I use for other things.

I spend most of my time on food on my free time, especially, on weekends. I'm home most of the time during those days.

Hard to tell these days as I've been making more of an effort to buy meats on sale and freeze them for later, and stock up on fruits/vegetables when they are in season and can or freeze them.  Plus increasing my summer garden and can or freeze that too.  With all that, I'm sure I'm spending a little less than I used to, but I haven't gathered enough data to figure out a new average.

In fact this winter, I took a "squirrel" approach - in stocking up on food before winter hit, and planned to eat mostly what I stocked up with, and minimal shopping at the store - only those items that really don't preserve well.

It really varies because we also eat food we can from the garden. I could only take a guess at this point. Thanks for the links though.

I'm not sure of a dollar amount, but I will say not much. I take a lunch with me to work, which is a tremendous savings, and most often eat home-cooked meals at a low cost.

Yeah I have no idea how much we eat either. We stockpile *a lot*.
We spend a lot, and are blessed enough to not have to pay attention to the budget that closely. For the most part we buy whatever is on sale though, and then make meals from that plus the stockpile (which is apparently how you are supposed to do it, just like kapeh12 did over winter).

But in any case, it's got me curious, so I think I'm going to start a food diary - like you do when dieting? - only at the end instead of tracking calories I'll look up food prices. If I really get into it, I might scan receipts, so I'll know actual prices, but for the first month I'll probably just take a guess from a list what the price was :P
For me, I'm terrible at accounting, so I dunno if I'll finish it to share, (so don't hold your breath for it lol) but if I do I might post next month knowing an amount. :D

We spend about $50 weekly on groceries. Eat out maybe once every 3 weeks or so.
