I agree with Gizmo42...there's no need to change your status on your work papers. I always claimed 0 on my papers. They take more out during the year but at least it's less to worry about at tax time. Usually can get a refund for overpaying during the year.

Tax people say to make sure you claim at least 1 on your employee forms but that's asking for trouble in my opinion. They look at it as why allow the government to use your money all year but there's a lot of 'what ifs' and changes that can take place during the year that could mess you up and you'd have to owe.

I would like to thank you for agreeing with me.

I would rather have them take out less during the year and allow my money to grow (in interest / dividends) than to give it to the government to use for free during the year. It may mean that I don't get a large refund and might have to pay, but in the long run I'll have more money in my pockets.

And because I usually end up having to pay a little at tax time, I wait until the last minute so that that money can have a couple more months to grow. This year because my side-business didn't have much income, I may have a larger refund than other years, so I'll probably start to do them sooner.

Changing it would help since you would have less withheld from your checks, which means more money in your pockets now.

Really the only theoretical what-ifs and changes during the year are having income from some other source, which should allow you to easily pay any taxes due since you do in fact have a lot more money at your disposal. If you make more at your job, your going to have more withheld.

Why cant you do your own taxes. I have used H&R Block in the past and found out that they are too expensive. I use nothing but Turbo TAX NOW
