I retired at the age of 64, only because my back gave out on me and I also got very sick and it took awhile to get better, I am 72 and would love to go back to work, but my back will not hold up to a lot of anything, not even sitting on the computer to do fusion cash. Getting old sucks. I knew this time was coming  has a result of 2 bad car wrecks 3 months apart. Both times some one ran red lights.. Oh well I will continue to do as much as I can and to heck with the rest.

My advice - take your time cause "retirement" is not all it's cut out to be.  I have been retired now for three years and sometimes it's just plain "boring" so I have in these three years gone back to work "part-time" just to have something better to do with my time.  It's all fine and dandy at the start, but believe me you will get bored!!!  Good luck with your decision.

Going on 15 years and I am not bored yet.

I retired at age 57 after 34 years with the same agency.  I only left because I thought it was time for  a change in management and... my mother needed more of my time.  I haven't regretted retiring early. I'm free to come and go as I please.  My advice:  max out on your 401K or save as much as you can for retirement because Soc. Security may not be adequate to live on.

I don't think I will be bored. I have so much I would like to do but so little time because of the job. I think that is what I give up most now, my own time.

I retired early.  It may have been a mistake, but I make just about the same amount now while working part-time with my pension and Social Security than I did when working full-time. And I like my part-time job better than I did my full-time job. :rose:

I think I would like a part time job better than my full time job at this point.

Talking of retirement, we realized about 12 months ago that my husbands job was going to expire in 17 years, but our mortgage was due to run for another 10 years after his retirement. So we called the bank and got refinanced into a 15 year fixed rate mortgage. I wished we had done this much sooner but having said that, much sooner we probably couldn't have afforded the interest rate!

I retired in January, 2010.  I worked for a local government and had over 30 years in the sytem.  I was only 54 when I retired and have loved every minute of it.

You found out that your job was going away in 17 years? what type of job is that?

I "retired" on disability in 2008 and am just 61 now.  I also took early retirement from a job I held for 15 years, it really cut my retirement check down low but it enabled us to make it and has really been a blessing since my husband passed away at only 57 years old.  Things always work out somehow.  Well good luck with your retirement countdown.  Much happiness and success to you.

I  had to retire at 62 and did not like it. So I took on some merchandiser jobs like putting greeting cards up for American greetings and also putting up and taking down books for another company. did that for a few years until my back would not hold up to it any more. a lot of lifting and a heck of a lot of bending. I enjoyed it.  Now I am just a stay at home spouse. I miss working but  just no can do. all because of a drunk driver running a stop light.
