I've often thought I was born 100 years too late. I would have absolutely been at home in the 1800's. I could have lived in a lone cabin on the prairie having never laid eyes on another human being apart from my family for months and been just fine with that. Living the "hard life" wouldn't be difficult at all for me. One day a week our family shuts down all the modern conveniences and lives without using the computer, TV's, electric lights, cell phones, tablets, etc. I wouldn't have any problem at all leaving all of those things behind and living 100% off the grid.
I'm comfortable cooking in cast iron skillets over a fire outside (do it on a regular basis in the summer), cooking on an antique wood stove (you really CAN taste a difference in food cooked that way), doing laundry by hand the hard way, sewing by hand, reading by oil lamp. I grew up on a farm so I would be comfortable with raising animals and growing my own food.
I most definitely could give up the modern lifestyle and live an isolated life. The problem would lie in the financial side of things. Like sgluckadoo said, if you didn't own the woods, you would be trespassing. And if you do own the woods you will have to pay taxes on it. Unless you are amazingly wealthy and can leave an unlimited amount of money in a bank somewhere with directions to pay your property taxes every year, you will have to come out at least once a year. I wouldn't want to risk setting up a life in a cabin somewhere and then all of a sudden someone show up and send me to jail for trespassing. Living simply isn't just a matter of doing it and forgetting about everything else.
