Melatonin: It's Not Just For Sleep

Do you have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep? You're not alone. According to the CDC, sleep insufficiency is a growing problem and considered a public health epidemic.

According to the The Sleep Disorders Research at the National Institute of Health, about 30-40 percent of adults say they suffer from chronic insomnia.

Instead of taking a prescribed sleeping pill, you may want to try a more natural remedy: melatonin. Since it is produced in your brain, taking small doses can help regulate sleep.

But did you know that melatonin isn't just for sleep?

Melatonin is a hormone made by the pineal gland, a tiny gland in your brain. This hormone is mainly in charge of regulating your sleep and wake cycles. But, Melatonin also has other health benefits.

Melatonin is also used to help slow digestion, calm your brain waves and relax your muscles.

A study conducted a team of researchers of Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in Sao Paolo, Brazil, found that taking 3 mg of melatonin 30 minutes before your bedtime can help sooth your migraines.

Are there any other hidden benefits?

Dr. Mike explains how melatonin works, why it helps promote natural sleep and the other hidden benefits.

my dr told me that you have to take it every day for it to work and that it will take at least a month for it to do what you want it to...he said if you have sleep problems just taking it every so often you dont get the full effects of it...said it is completely safe to take daily

I take Melatonin on a regular basis to fall asleep.   I take 1/4 of a 5 mg chewable tablet Trader Joe's Brand - the chewable Trader Joe brand tastes pretty good & are meant to be chewed, fyi :)

It would knock me out if I took it during the day.

I may give this a try. I think I've got insomnia and it has interrupted getting normal sleep for a long time.

I only took this maybe 3 times.  Had horrible nightmares every time.  This is a side effect.  In general I do believe more people may deal with insomnia but I do not believe it is a disease or epidemic.  People go to bed with their electronics, play with them for an hour or so before they roll over to go to sleep, have a lot on their minds that they cannot just turn off when they lay down, people are stressed about money, jobs, providing food for themselves and their family.

hitch - you can chew them if you get the gummy ones and they taste pretty good.

flyingmonkey- seriously?  You take 1/4 of one and it knocks you out?  The directions say to chew 1 - 2 gummy(s).  Cannot imagine 1/4 of ONE knocking anyone out. lol  When I did take them it did make me sleepy and I slept all the time I wasn't having horrible nightmares and trying to recover from it after I woke up terrified and too petrified to go back to sleep.  I have talked to others who have said they had the same side effects.

I would rather deal with getting less sleep.

Don't know what I'd do without melatonin tbh. I still have insomnia, but the melatonin helps a little bit.
