Thank you for those stories, countrygirl. They exemplify the very reasons why I am skeptical to help anyone who overtly solicits for money. You give from your hard-earned money from the bottom of your heart. They take your hard-earned money and spend it on drugs, alcohol, and other sources of desire. The next time someone begs for money, I'll point them to the local shelter or unemployment office.

I always think it's funny when people say "just go apply for a minimum wage job." You have NO idea what they may have already tried.

when I was unemployed a few years ago I applied at little stores in the mall, fast food, etc., could not even get an interview. Thanks to my college degree I'm actually so overqualified that I can't even get my foot in the door.

Try not to judge people, you really have NO clue what people may have been doing.

With that said, I don't give beggars money, either.

I don't give people money.  Too many are professional scam artists or drug addicts. If you want to help out, donate to reputably charitable organizations.

I don't say "go apply for a min wage job"    I do say don't stand in a parking lot where they have "now hiring" signs and beg for money.  Like I pointed out already I have heard people say "I am not working for min wage" but yet they are standing on the street corner begging for money and saying they are hungry.  IF you were hungry or cared about supporting yourself you would take what is available.

I am not judging anybody.  And people have no idea what I go thru.  But when you follow me to my car I have a right to say what I want.  This guy was dressed nice and was over weight.  He had not missed any meals and obviously had clean clothes.  He did not live in a field as he told me.

I know first hand jobs are hard to come by.  I work on a job I do not like nor do I want.  But it is what I could get.  As for the college education - I have that as well.  Idk.  I do know there are people who would rather have it handed to them that to work for it.  It just irritates me.  The more I think about it the madder it actually makes me.  There ARE jobs out there but most people are too lazy to work.  It's like where I work now the same people call in at least 2 days a week.  They are worthless and lazy.

Sorry to say but I think you are missing the point. You made this thread to get peoples initial reactions and input on the subject. I'm not here to criticize. I don't always have the money either but if I do, that is when I can give. Some people have closed minds and don't actually picture them in their shoes. What if you were homeless with your hungry babies with you? Would you ask for money then? That is probably the only time I think I would have to beg for money is if I had my children with me. Other than that, some people are less fortunate than others and some are more fortunate than others. I don't have a lot but I consider myself to be very blessed and very fortunate for what I have. :)

I would have to know for fact that they were lying before I wouldn't give them anything.

I have given to people that did lie to me, I found out after the fact....but it's ok because they just made their own Karma, as did I.  ;)

I don't care if other people give them money.  And the thing is "I" have always done what it takes to survive.  This includes taking jobs I didn't want to do.  Taking jobs that pay min wage.  If a person has kids they can get food stamps so feeding their kids shouldn't be a problem.  Except when the worthless parent sells the food stamps for drug money.  I am not arguing with anybody just discussing.  Or that's what I am trying to do. lol.  Nobody knows what "I" have been thru either.  Yes, I have a nice house.  I have worked HARD to have and to keep it.  I don't go to movies, go out and eat, or other wasteful things.  I know people who will eat out at Red Lobster and then cry cause they can't buy food.  I don't feel sorry for people like that.  People need to get their priorities in line.  This time of year a man can get a job doing something.  But most people are lazy.  They don't want to work.  People want to cry about the Mexicans and say they are taking our jobs.  NO they are not.  They will work and will work for the wages offered.  The same people who walk off their job protesting asking for $15 an hour when they have no skills and no education are the same ones who are asking for a hand out.

My point is I struggle myself and most of the ones asking for a handout have more than I do.  So it kind of irritates me when people want to act like I am a bad person because I don't give the last few pennies I have.

This has been an interesting subject.  Seems most people feel the same way I do and do not give cash to beggars on the street but will donate to an established charity.  There are others who will give cash to people who ask and that's fine.  If there were not people like that and everyone was like me they wouldn't stand out there with their signs or follow people around in parking lots.  It would be a waste of time.

Heck, I thought about making a sign and standing out there myself.  They make $300-$400 a day.  And all they do is hold a sign and look sad.  LOL

Maybe that's part of why I feel the way I do.  I have been flat out lied to.  I found out later.  I don't believe in Karma though. lol

I agree. I do not give any money. We have several panhandle who stand on the corners asking for money while smoking cigarettes. Use the money you have for food instead...

Yes some people are just trying to get away with lies. They come up with a story to beg for money. I also believe that any homeless person if they keep trying they will find a job. There are always a way out but most homeless people are too lazy to do anything so they beg for money. Now some people are honest and they just end up in unfortunate situation and they need money right away...I have seen and encountered a lot of homeless people in Arizona and if people come to me to ask for money I always say to them I don't have cash on me but I can buy you food instead..

never give a begger money !!!!  if they are homeless I give them directions to a shelter for help,,,  direct them to our dinner kitchen for a nice meal  or send them to a food place to get help with food for a certain amount of time.  But never give them money !!
