Stealing....
« on: June 11, 2015, 12:40:02 pm »
I was got an email for reading a reply on the forum, and I saw that a FC member had a copyrighted image ( which I am pretty sure no royalities are being paid for,) now, I,  a person that works for the company he stole from, it is my duty to report it.
However, since he has an assumed name, I can not realy tell who he is, that would be an IT thing..
But I guess some people think it is ok  to steal copyrighted material, and not pay for it...
though that really doesn't set right with me...

Well I think the easiest thing to do would be 1. Contact the person and ask them to remove it. If that does not work 2. Report it to FC.

I was brought up to believe that even taking a pencil that didn't belong to me was stealing.  Our moral upbringing is much more relaxed today.  And I find that upsetting  :sad1:

As a professional artist and photographer this is a particular concern for me.  It seems that people think that if they find it on the internet it's free for them to use.  Just because you can capture it does not give you the right to use it in any way.  It's hard to govern what with Pinterest and other social media.  I've even had to deal with a former "friend" who not only thought it was okay, but that she was helping me by using several of my images on a site she put up, without my knowledge, much less permission.  What's worse is she's been on the board of the local art league for years and has no excuse to be ignorant of copyright laws.  :angry7:

I'd say contact the person, if you can, to inform them of the copyright law and ask that they "cease and desist".  You might include the fact that copyright infringement is serious - one instance of willful copyright infringement can cost up to $150,000!  If that doesn't work inform your company IT department so they can investigate so your legal representative can take whatever actions they need to.  Hopefully a simple "cease and desist" message will suffice.  Good luck.

I think it depends on what the person is using the picture for.
I used to work for Disney, people use their images all the time, I can't imagine they care who uses what unless it was for monetary gain or promotion; they pick and choose their battles.

You better be certain that it is,in fact, a copyrighted image and that no royalty fees are being paid before you make an accusation.

Has a copy-rite  image how?  A cartoon image as a avatar?  That's not stealing.  They are not using it for monetary gain.  I personally feel that starting this thread was just as bad as what YOU are accusing someone else of doing.  If I see something I think is against the TOS or something like that I don't start a thread about the person or what they said or may have done.  I report it and let FC deal with it.

I totally agree.

Disney characters are under copy-rite protection as in I can't use their characters for my own monetary gain.  Using a picture of a disney character as an avatar or something like that is not a big deal.  Nor is it stealing.  And no, they are not going to go after every person online that does this.  They really do not care.  And they would not waste money trying to sue a person for doing so.  Would be a frivolous lawsuit and they likely would never get any money.

If I seriously found someone to be doing something illegal I would not start a thread about them in a forum where I knew that person would likely see it.
