http://W3Schools.com is a great tutorial site for learning to build a website. Then find some free templates to get a head start.

First off what is the site for? That will determine a lot about the type of advice you need. Most modern websites are not as simple as they seem. Some will employ JavaScript... some PHP... ASP.... Then there's the question of if you will need databases... where and how you wanted hosted. You have to have to ask more than just ... How do I build a website. Thats kinda like walking in to Ford Motors and asking... Hey how do you build a car?

This is only half decent advice. In the words of the wise ol Mr. Myagi in The Next Karate Kid... Ambition without knowledge is like boat on dry land. There may be no need for you to actually anything other than possibly some CSS (and that would be only for customization) if the needs of your site are not that complex. Again what is the site for? If its a blog site, a content (written articles), forums or BBS site... then there is no need to spend years (and yes it would take you a LONG time to learn what it would take to build such sites). There is no need to do this since such Content managment sytems are out there and already provided by most hosting providers via a control panel.

I use Webs.com and Weebly.com.  There are other free web building sites out there.  With these sites it's WYSIWYG.  Just pick a template and go.  You don't have to know html but if you do you can also build your own sites with them.  I suggest you start with one of the free sites and play with it and see what you can come up with.  You can pick up code as you are playing with it.  After your page is built you can click on page source and see all the code and learn that way.

That half decent advice earns me over $6,000 a month, how much does your advice earn you?
