Cooking fish on grills
« on: July 02, 2015, 06:04:40 am »
Does anyone know how to grill fish outside?  I never grilled it, but would like to try on a gas grill.  Thanks for any help.

The major issue that people have when it comes to grilling fish is that the fish tends to stick to the grill if the grill isn't prepped well enough. Firstly, make sure you preheat the grill on high. Whether you are cooking fish on a grill or in a pan, the high heat will cause the fish to cook all the way through, and the fish will release itself from the cooking surface when done. While the grill is preheating, take a wire brush and scrape off any previous junk off of the grilling surface, again to prevent the fish from sticking. Also during this preheating step, take the fish out of the fridge and let it start warming up to room temperature. season the fish and generously oil it. Now when the grill is properly preheated, you can start to grill the fish. The rule of thumb is that it takes 8-10 minutes to thoroughly cook a 1" thick piece of fish, meaning each side should take between 3-5 minutes. Again remember that the fish will release itself off of the grill when it is done, so if it's about time to flip the fish, don't force it if the fish seems to be sticking a little at first. If you want to leave the skin on, first cook the flesh side and then flip it onto the skin side.

I always cook on Teflon mat so it doesn't stick on the grill.Or on aluminum foil.

I own a Traeger Hardwood Pellet Grill and have grilled HUNDREDS of fresh Salmon filets. I fire up the grill for 10 minutes, turn it down to medium heat and throw on the filet skin side down for an hour to hour and a half and then let it set for 5 minutes or so before serving. The only seasoning I use is salt, pepper, garlic powder and a little Rosemary. Trust me, people RAVE about the finished product. Oh, I use Alder pellets.

I usually wrap mines in foil and just grill it from there.

I LOVE fish cooked on a grill.  I have never cooked it myself but have watched others do it in several of the ways already explained.  There are also special fish grill cookers you can buy.  I've seen them and I think they are supposed to prevent sticking and help hold the fish together.

:) I grill mine in a foil pan so it doesn't fall through the grate. Mainly, for fish though, I smoke the fish.  :)
