Do You Believe In Tuff Love?
« on: July 03, 2015, 06:26:34 am »
Do you believe in tuff love towards your loved ones in some circumstances?  For instance, if your child was breaking the law, not listening to you, and either directly or indirectly hurting themself or others, could you turn this child in to the police and perhaps have them spend time in jail?  Myself, I definitely could do it...depending on the situation.  Sometimes, no matter who or what, you have to pay the piper!!!

TOUGH love?  Depends?  No, I would not turn my child in to the police.  You do something stupid trying to "teach them a lesson" and they end up being put in foster care.  It depends on the situation.  The guy who shot up the church in SC - his father and uncle turned him in.  Or at least identified him.

That's a really good question. Yes, I think I would turn my child over to the police if I felt they were going down the wrong path and they needed to face the consequences of their actions. I love my children very much, so much that I will not tolerate them going down the wrong path. Do you know, a while back I saw a father and daughter at the park. The dad was sat on the park bench a few feet behind his daughter who was holding a sign "I steal from my parents". She was stood right on the corner of a busy junction. I felt sorry for her, but I felt more proud of the dad who was making sure his daughter did not steal from him again!

I have actually been in the situation.I dont feel like elaborating but i can tell you it stinks!!

By punishing them you have to remember you might be saving their life. But again thats easier said then done. The best advice i can give is pour your heart out in prayer to ask God for calmness and give you help in doing the right thing.

I 100% believe in tuff love in legal situations like you described or anything else.  If you care about them, you do what is best for them even if they can't see it at the moment.

I believe in tough love, having had to do it once myself. My son skipped school and was in a wreck riding with a friend. Well the school put him on probation for skipping school.  then he showed up with his friend to see the probation office and had liquor on his breath.  The PO put him in juvie detention called me and said I could come and pick him up. My question was how long could I leave him in and it was for overnight. That is what I did. Never had anymore trouble out of him. Of course I put him to work. Working with me after school. Also  enrolled him in the big brother big sister program. Wonderful people. Tough Love does work sometimes.

Never had children, so a hard question to answer however I have had family members who needed tuff love as that was the only way to help them get out of their situation and not become an enabaler of  their bad behavior and poor choices.

I believe that I have instilled a good ethical, moral, decision making system in my children and trust them completely so if they did something wrong I would not have to discipline them or turn them into the police-I trust that they would do it themselves or have a very good reason as to why they would make their choices. I have ben to every event that my children have been involved in and strived to be the best role model possible. I have sacrificed the things I enjoy the most in order to provide guidance and love to my children. I have been there for their toughest questions and let them work the answers out by themselves and praising them for getting the correct answer or gently steering if they were headed towards a less than savory thought process. So, No, I do not believe in tough love in my stuation.

I pray that I never have to get to that state and be tested in that way.  I don't think that I would be able to turn them over to the police but who knows what I would do if really pushed too far.  Love will force you to do things you never thought possible.

I think it depends on what they did. I've seen situations where tough love has worked and where it has back fired horribly. It's something you'll have to use your best judgment.

that's good for you, I would do the same. Of course, if they did something wrong, they should turn them in by their own and learn from that in the future.

I believe in tough love if they are falling off the right path. Common sense tough love though --- regulations, atonement, community service, etc...  some tough love that people do to their kids is just plain crazy & abusive...  some times it has resulted in death of the child.

If it was so horrendous and dangerous of a crime, I definitely would turn them in,  but otherwise, it would depend on what it was & if was ongoing.  Getting a Felony when you are young will haunt you for life, try finding a job with a Felony, or getting even a contractor license.
