Travel in Mexico
« on: July 07, 2015, 01:46:09 pm »
My husband and I are traveling to the middle of Mexico to celebrate a special event of a family member who lives there.  We have never been there before....any advice on money (take $$$ with us or a cc or travelers checks) or other travel advice? Electricity conversions? Taxis? We are going to a city of about 50K people.

I think you'll find most places accept our currency and I don't remember about the electricity, etc.  Be careful cause there's a lot of bad stuff going on in Mexico.

Convert some money to pesos. Some vendors will take advantage of you if you pay in dollars. The electricity is the same as here in the US. If you go out stay in busy places and use established vendors for any tours. Use the same caution you would with your valuables and personal items as you would here. The are people everywhere who will look for opportunities to steal. We have been to Mexico 6 times and have enjoyed it each time!

I agree about converting money right away.  There are many that take advantage of Americans and will increase the price so it is much better to have pesos.  Drink bottled water and I have been told to avoid riding in a taxi.  We did ride a bus a couple of times and wow do they pack the people on.  Just be cautious as you should be in any foreign country.  The electricity is the same as far as I can remember but I did have to contact my cell phone carrier to make sure that I could use my phone out of the USA.  It had an added fee but well worth it when traveling out of the country.   Enjoy !!

Why not ask the people you are visiting?  They would know better than anyone.  I would not carry cash.  I would have a prepaid credit card.  Or some credit card companies will allow you to get a temporary card to use when you travel over seas.  Or apply for a new card and just use it for that.  I would probably go for a prepaid card and load so much money on to that.  But if you loose it then you are just out.  Personally, I wouldn't travel to Mexico for any reason or any amount of money.

Why would they accept our currency?  We don't accept theirs.  And they are different.

I would love to travel to the zone of silence in Mexico. I saw that place on ancient aliens one night. Looks pretty cool to me.

They will accept American dollars because the exchange rates get them more than if they just dealt in pesos. The exchange rates are usually between 10 to 15 pesos to the dollar.

Thank you for all you tips and comments.  I have checked, of course, with the people I am visiting...their response,,,don't worry we will pay for everything.  A great answer but still wanted to know what folks experiences were.  And yes, they do accept american dollars because they make so much more that way.  Looking forward to the new experiences. Adios!

Don't forget your passports, it is not easy getting back into the states with out them and do not carry a gun. We used to go to Mexico all the time and then it got so bad on the border we quit going.  At times on the border bullets do fly.  Maybe down closer to the middle of Mexico it is better but not along the border.

Be careful because the Mexican government is looking for a escapee. This man is bad.
