Memory
« on: July 19, 2015, 06:41:37 am »
Do you have a good memory or do you write a lot of things down? I do not have a good memory, so I write things down in my memo pad of my phone, at home, I place notes on my wall, place notes in my car and use a lot of post-its at work, lol.

My memory is certainly not as good as it once was when I was younger.   I attribute it to age, even though I'm not really old.   Sometimes I'll go into a room in my house and suddenly wonder why I went in there.   My mom had alzheimers but her symptoms did not appear until she was well into her 80's.   Don't want to spend time worrying about if it's going to be my path in life so for now I make lists, stay active and just keep plugging along.

My memory sucks ('scuse the language) anymore, probably due to age plus anesthesia received a couple years ago. Up until then, I had no problem but it took almost a whole year for me to get back to a normal routine due to excess anesthesia from 2 surgeries within a week of each other. I thought I was in the final  stages of Alzheimer's!

Now, I'm a little better but still have to write things down if they're NOT important...like something I saw on TV that would interest hubby or programs that I think he would enjoy or else I won't remember them when he's n the room (but as soon as he leaves the house, I will remember them.

I'm also having some trouble with "word-finding" when talking  I know the word, I just can't spit it out so I have to give a "definition" of the word I'm trying to say. This, too, started after the first surgeries. It gets frustrating.

I usually make notes in my phone.  Depends on what it is.  If it is like a grocery list I write it down.  I hate going back.

My memory's not bad.  I'm especially good at remembering dates or numbers.  Sometimes my family will argue with me over a date (like when my Grandmother was born).  They get so mad they go and pull out their proof only to see I was right, LOL.  I guess it was all those years I spent having to open my office door via a combination lock, much like opening a safe.  You couldn't write the combo down, it had to be "in your head."

My memory is decent, but I still make lists and write things down.
For me, making a list keeps me organized.

I think most people attribute their memory loss to age. But young people forget things too; they just don't worry about it. I think my memory is okay, but I have always depended on notes to help me remember things.

I do think it is beneficial to practice memory skills sometimes just to keep sharp. Your brain is a muscle too, after all. It needs exercising just like the other body parts do.

When I get super busy, I tend to have too much to remember. I get overwhelmed and NEED to write it down. Otherwise I do pretty well with memory. This concerns me though as I am 51 and alzheimers runs in the family. I better take my B12 vitamins now.
