Screaming while Giving Birth
« on: August 05, 2015, 08:47:04 pm »
Do you think screaming does any good when a woman goes into labor? I think if a woman screams while she pushes out a baby, that only makes the pain worse.

Is it a choice for some women?  I wasn't a screamer during childbirth because I'm not normally a screamer.  I feel most women are in a different "zone" when they're giving birth and giving birth happens more naturally for some women than others.

I had a tendency to have dry heaves when I was experiencing the pain of childbirth; and I can honestly say, it wasn't a choice.

Have a great day!

Giving birth is different for every woman.
I am one of the lucky ones.  Natural birth....easy labor, easy delivery.  No Screaming.

I was with my daughter when she gave birth to the first grandchild.  She didn't scream, but she needed some pain management.  Nothing wrong with that.

Screaming isn't going to make the pain worse, nor is it going to lessen the pain either. There's no relation. If you're naturally a "screamer", I think it only makes sense that you would scream.

Even though it was many years ago, when I gave birth to my second daughter, there was a woman who screamed at the top of her lungs periodically over the next two hours.  It stopped and I suspect she had her child.  However, she literally screeched over and over throughout the period and for me, and probably others, it was very disconcerting.  I remember literally thinking, "Where's the masking tape?"

I recall when I went in for one of my early pregnancy appointments that there was a lady in one of the other rooms in labor. I could hear her screaming and shouting and honestly, I was quite shocked. It was like a realization that the tv documentaries on labor and child bearing were not exaggerated, I became quite fearful for my own child's birth. However when the time came, I totally zoned out. I did not scream or shout, I quietly concentrated and focused on pushing my son out! Yes I may have grunted or exhaled in a dramatic fashion, it wasn't intended, I just did what I needed to do to get through the pain. For me, that was to close my eyes, hold onto a piece of furniture, and count how many seconds were going by. My husband didn't get away scot-free. I remember vomiting on my husband and he had to change into scrubs. Honestly, screaming or not, we women have to do what we have to do to get through the pain. Nobody should feel bad. We are, after all, enabling a miracle to occur!

No, it doesn't do any good, I had four children....it's about breathing and relaxing.  :)
