Certainly one way of looking at it.  I have also seen people that have over invested their health and happiness in a relationship that was bound to go nowhere. I am far from believing in disposable relationships but I think that a person needs to enjoy life and if there primary focus is on making a relationship work, to the exclusion of their own happiness, they could be creating an unhealthy situation.  Too much of anything is never good.  I am happy for you if you feel that eight years of fighting was worth it. Given that most of us have a life expectancy of under eighty years and we do not really enter relationships for the first ten years of our lives, I do not know that I could have invested well over ten percent of my life for a cause such as this.

Ouch, I hope you are off on your figures somewhere. Since I am 77 now, I wonder how much less than 80 I can expect out of life? I admit, I am having my share of health problems, but not quite ready to give up completely yet.

I hope the life expectancy figures are off too, oldbuddy.
In my family, both parents are over 85.  My grandpa on my dad's side lived to be 99.

I'm at 58 and plan to see many many more years!
