My son was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He is on meds  but exercise and diet is the key.One thing that  has been helpful is meeting with a dietitian. She/he can help you learn how to balance your diet.
Best of luck to you.

Excerise and diet, watch your carb intake for it turns to sugar, eat a little less than you normally would, try to eat a more healthier foods. You can eat desserts just make sure you basically proportion your meals

Thanks to members who sent replies of encouragement & information, I'm planning to join a gym with a good monthly membership rate.My doc referred me to the diabetic center in town but I've ignored their messages to set up an appointment cuz I just feel like the kid who failed a grade level & have to repeat the class in summer school! I feel like a reject!

My mom and grandpa have it and diet and exercise is the key. It's a lifestyle change but it will get easier. Good luck!

I have been diagnosed as type 2 for 15 years and it's not that big a deal for me. I hardly ever stick my finger anymore, just watch my A1C.

Diddo (although it's been more like 8 yrs. for me). Yes, diet and exercise are the best ways to control it, although some people (such as myself) may have genetic factors to consider as well, so you may also need to take some medicine. Same with "watching what you eat"; after awhile it just becomes second nature to know different healthy replacements (eg get whole-wheat breads instead of plain white bread) and proper portion control so you don't always have to be counting carbs, as Teerz mentioned. In fact, although carbs are an important source of sugars, most any food can be converted into sugars, so calories is better to count than carbs; although bacon has very little carbs (if any, for meats are proteins and fats, not carbs) it is still not good for a diabetic to eat a lot of for it is still high in calories (in the form of fats) as well as sodium (which is important to monitor for heart-disease -- one of the several serious results of diabetes).

If you are young and other family members have been diagnosed, you may have a genetic predisposition.  As others have stated, exercise and diet is crucial.  Exercise causes the body to use excess sugars.  Be sure to take diabetes seriously as it can lead to VERY serious consequences, such as amputation and bad vision problems.  The kidneys can eventually become involved.  It is nothing to ignore.
