Why is straight hair the standard?
« on: October 01, 2015, 09:17:40 pm »
Especially for job settings, I think as long a your hair is neat it shouldn't matter what your hair texture is. I have long curly hair and I always feel pressure to straighten it for a job interview. I see women with straight hair coming into the workplace  with hairstyles that look like bird's nest and no one says a word, but if someone with curly hair has one hair out of place its a problem. I don't think that's fair.

I've never had that problem.  My hair became somewhat naturally curly when I went through menopause and I don't fight it.  I keep it neat and clean and use styling gel to define the waves and curls.  Occasionally, I straighten it.  No one ever said a thing about my hair, when I worked or otherwise.  I'm not sure what the problem can be. Is it your hair or the people you work with?

I've spent thousands of hours over the years trying to straighten, smooth, and control my naturally curly hair.  I have now freed my hair to be its normal self....with a little anti-frizz product.  Life is much simpler now.

Wow! I never heard this one before. How did you come to this conclusion? Where was the pressure to straighten your hair before your interview coming from?

If your hair is really long, I would suggest putting it up for your interview and then test the waters when you get the job. It shouldn't matter how curly your hair is.

So far as being fair; life isn't. Not ever.

It sounds as though your hair is beautiful so don't hide it!

I've had to live with curly hair all my life and I never had the type of problem you're talking about.  I always wished my hair was straight and did all sorts of things to get it that way.  Back in the day, we didn't have "flat irons."  I finally got tired of all the work it took to get my hair even a little bit straighter and just let it go it's natural way.  What a relief that was.  I didn't have to rely on carrying a blow dryer to work to calm the curl.  To this day, the routine is easy.  Wash and air dry.  We all wish for things we don't have.  Classic case of "the grass is greener on the other side," LOL.  No, it's not.
