I have never had an issue with Amazon. In fact I love it! I just ordered a few things last week.

so many people "love" Amazon.
When you joined, you didn't know that it would be so difficult to close your account and definitely confusing.
I don't how many have closed their accounts; I saw some blog information going back to 2013.
I got fed up with them last month, myself.
There is no, not one easy way to close the account. I went through this just a few minutes ago.
You have to call them first.
They send you an email -- it has an extra link to join an amazon program, which you don't want when you want to close the account, and the correct link. The correct link takes you to the general website if you don't press it hard enough.
Then, they want  you to send them an email from a link they sent you.
Then, they tell you that you have to wait 5 days for your account to be closed.

What is the big deal?  Just don't use it any more.  Are you sure you will NEVER order from Amazon again?  You do not have to keep a credit card or debt card attached to the account.  Besides the fact that if you have ordered in the past you might want to for some reason go back and see something you ordered, how much you paid for it, when you ordered it...

Also most people on this site say they do other sites as well and a lot of them pay with Amazon codes.

I love Amazon and have found great deals; however, I can't see paying for the "prime." I find it outrageous. Who can afford that now a days.

Sounds like facebook, you can never really truly close it, even if you are dead.
