When I lie awake at night I find the best thing to do is get out of bed for a short while - maybe sit in a chair, read a book and just try to re-direct my mind from all the daily activities.  Of course, if need be I will also take an Advil PM cause that has some sort of sleep aid in it and at times it helps.

I am currently taking Melatonin. It does wonders for me. Then again, so does Benadryl, LOL.

Ongoing problem in my life. I do a number of thjngs none of which are greatly helpful.
-avoid caffeine at night
-relax at night
-take melatonin or the occasional tylenol pm
-exercise (not close to bed time)
-stopped watching tv in bed

Sometime it because you are in stress.  Try to relax yourself... (I know it's easy to say and it hard to do. :)) But keep trying I think you will able to sleep without any pill.

A soak in warm tub with a cup of Epsom Salts for 20 minutes  fixes my insomnia lately...

Yes, occasionally I do.  I try to make sure I go to bed at the same time.  If I can't sleep after 45 minutes I get up, read a while and have some hot water (surprisingly this helps).  I have also found that changing to a different bed if I can't sleep in one helps. Then, a trick my mom taught me.  Inhale to a count of eight, hold for a count of four, then exhale for a count of eight.  Do this til you fall asleep. Neither of us has ever made it to ten.  We think the trick is that it oxygenates your system forcing it to relax and since you are concentrating on the counts, you cannot think of other things that may be worrying you or keeping you awake.  Good luck!

Are you stressed? or something worrying you? if not you might need to see a Dr. for sleep apnea. Most of the times I don't sleep because I am constantly worried about the future. But overall, often times it's those bathroom visits that keep me up and can't get a good enough sleep. I called 5-6 hours a good sleep for me.

Periods? Well, my wife takes supplements like selenium or vitamin E to thin the blood so it can expel easily.

I just lay in bed, until I fall asleep. Watching tv only makes it worse.

My suggestion is to see your Doctor.  There maybe something else going on with your body.
