I don't believe in credit cards anymore. For that reason I am all for cash. For so many reasons, I am always tempted when it comes to credit cards in fact, I am still paying for past credits while I was in college. I know there are pros and cons of having one and I chose to stay away from this temptation this time!!!

Thanks for helping us make some financially intelligent decisions.  Is it possible that we also improve our credit score as we use the Discover card and pay on it in a timely manner?
Have a great day!

Maybe some people can't get a credit card, maybe some people don't want a credit card because of all the risks and there are debit cards that reward your spending depending who you have.  If you concentrate on saving money by finding good deals or cut out some spending you will have more money.  Also judging how some people post on here about any topic I find it hard to believe that they understand a lot of things especially saving money.  It's good that you use your credit card responsibly but for some that is not a good idea.  I had a credit card but realized I didn't need it  Having a good savings account and carrying a debit card if you don't want to carry cash is a safe idea.   8) :peace:

I didn't say it was a good idea for everyone, but it sure works for me.

I decided to start this as a new topic, because so many posts I see about credit cards vs. debit cards or cash don't seem to get it.

Are there any here who don't realize that Discover pays rebates on all purchases made (which is like free money) and as long as you pay your bill every month your cost is NOTHING?

Why would anyone use a debit card (or cash) that pays you nothing?

All it takes is a little (very little) discipline and you can make money from spending what you are going to spend anyway. If nothing else, charge your purchase and take the cash you were going to use and put it in a jar at home to pay your credit card bill with at the end of the month.

We have over $500 coming this year and Christmas season is just starting, so it will go up.

No I don't work for Discover and there are other cashback cards around you can use, but if you are here clicking and posting on Fusioncash, it's obvious you know the value of getting a little free money to help out. These credit card companies can be beat at their own game.

Right now I am earning 10% cashback on purchases I make on Amazon.com when I use my VISA credit card.

My answer is this... I am much more conscious of my spending when it is MY MONEY and not borrowed money. I appreciate the "free money" that credit cards can offer, but other than gas, the rest of my spending varies depending on what I buy and where, whether I use a coupon, etc.

Even if I could get 1% back on all purchases, I would still likely spend more because it is not cold hard cash.

To each their own :) I'm super thrifty but do not take advantage of a credit card's "free" money.

I love finding/reading testimonies of ways to stretch the little cash I do have, I try to pay it forward as much as possible! As a child I was raised on a disabled, single patent income.  This had taught me to be on a budget making life a bit easier to handle. Over the years, with great planning, I have also learned how to use cash to my advantage.  Not always settling is my belief,  I'm an option kinda girl lol May u all be blessed with a path to get u through trials and tribulations with a plan!

I looked into that one myself.  They have what they call a secured credit card.  They will give you a trial period for say one year , but you have to give them a certain amount of cash to fund the account...what you would put in a debit card account.  They won't touch the money unless you don't make your payments.  If after a year you have faithfully paid your bills; you will be given a higher amount of credit and I believe you can now get the original seed money back.  I pretty sure that's how building your credit history works.

I have always detested debit cards. They scare me to death. I never liked the entire concept. And now that they've been compromised at more than one retail store, I think it proves my point. I have used them occasionally, but I still don't like them at all.   :-\ :bad:

The Discover It card is the bomb! It's my fav. I also have a Sam's Club Discover and a BOA card that gives me cash back.

I never done this.  I got a job and applied for a credit card.  My first card was a gas card.  I paid the bill on time and never went over.  Went from there to build credit.  You also build credit by having something like a cable bill in your name.  I always thought a secured credit card was like a prepaid card.  You can't spend more money than you have on the card.
