walk in clinics
« on: November 23, 2015, 07:55:04 am »
Yesterday was Sunday.
I had a problem that required medical attention.
I was able to go to one of the walk in clinics in the city.
I am glad they are available.
The particular one I went to is open 7am to 7pm  seven days a week.
The price was quite reasonable. [@ $20]

Those types of clinics have become my go-to place for minor yet acute medical attention. I'd rather get seen relatively quickly and pay <$50 to be told to stay home and drink fluids than going to an ER (with a $300 ER charge right up front) and being told the same thing (which was how this person I know racked up a medical bill of over $500 for a diagnosis of the common cold). If people were in more control over their health care expenses, I think you'd see more of these types of clinics beings used, and letting the ERs and Urgent Care wings of hospitals be saved for those requiring more in-depth medical attention.

We used to have an urgent care facility in our area which was very convenient and much less aggravating than our local ER unit.  I live right next to our local hospital and could walk to the ER if I had to in less than five minutes, but I still preferred the urgent care facility which was about a 10 or 15 minute drive.

A few years ago, the hospital bought them out to "consolidate services" but it was really to do away with the competition and get back all of the money the hospital was losing to folk choosing urgent care over the emergency room.  It was so much cheaper and much better service before that merger.

I have used them and never had any problems.  The ones open here are open from 7am to 10pm 7 days a week.  The wait yo see a doctor is quick compared to ERs where you can wait hours.  The are great for non threatening illnesses.  Of course if it's serious go to the ER.

Does this type of thing count as like a Patient First place? I've been there multiple times in my life and the cost was always high ($$$), even when I was on my dad's medical insurance. I know there's a couple free clinics in the city, but it takes a lot of paperwork to get "approved." There's what I think is called Concentria Urgent Care down the street that I've been curious about but don't know anything about. I just try to hope and pray I don't have any medical issues, and I rarely get the flu/cold - no money, and no health insurance, so I might be in quite a pickle if something happened.

Interesting.
I'm glad such places exist.
I've heard of CVS Minute Clinic, is it something like that.  Or is it like a community clinic that charges by a sliding scale based on income.

I know the city has a health center that is free if you qualify, otherwise it is $100 up front.

I like the $20 fee.  Health care should not require people to go in to debt.   I wish my city  taxes would go to help the people of my city first.

Wow that was great... At our place they close Saturday and Sunday so if you need medical attention have to go to emergency.  Very frustrating if they are busy there.

"Urgent Care" facilities are becoming the norm for medical care.
If you think about it, no one wants to go to the doctor when they feel good so when you feel bad it is urgent to you.

I love walk-in clinics. I never go to the Hospital Emergency Room unless it is really serious and they are going to keep me overnight...because it is really expensive!

I think they are a great and affordable way to get treatment for minor problems.  It is much more affordable than the emergency room.

I wish we had a walk in clinic here. But we are such a small town no one will put one in. We call the hospital here a band aid hospital. Because  half of the time they fly or use the ambulance and send you out of town. They no longer deliver babies here and you either already have to be in the town where you will deliver or be flown to a place.  If it is not real serious they will treat you here or like I said fly or go by ambulance and it gets real expensive in a hurry. My bill when I went for A-Bib for 4 hours was almost $5,000...that is high. But they got the heart under control and I did not have to fly out.

If you know they are going to tell you to stay home and drink fluids then why go and pay anything?  Most people don't grasp what an ER is for and tend to abuse it.  If it's just a bad cold then wait til you can see your PCD and wait your turn. lol.  Most ER's there is a long wait anyway because they don't rush you in if you are not an actual emergency.
