Save money on gas!!
« on: August 22, 2009, 10:48:51 pm »
Pretty much if you want to save money, its hust this easy! Dont speed. If you do the speed limit or even drive slower you burn less gas. When its really hot this helps out a lot. Because if you didnt know, the hotter it is your really getting less gas to begin with at the pump.  :o

It also helps to pump at night.

Pumping at night when the temp is down?  Does that really work?

How about use your price chopper advantage card at sunoco, and don't ride the break.

Not breaking as much helps save gas. Thats why when you buy a car you always get more gallons on the hwy than street! You dont have to stop as much on the hwy as you do on the street! And yes pumping at night does help, also using you discount card at gas stations like krogers gives you 0.10 off on the gal.

Definitely less break helps save money, I agree...but, can you guys explain more about the 'pumping at night that helps' ? why is that?

According to this post: http://www.realtechnews.com/posts/3428
Gasoline indeed expands in the heat, meaning that you get less of the liquid than you get when it's cold.  Gas company exec on there claims that the energy content of the two cases is the same, meaning that the hotter gas (which you get less of) has more energy stored in it by volume, than the cold gas.  Who knows.

to follow up the admin's post ill do a little chem lesson 101.
temperature is a measure of how fast particles or atoms are moving(not heat). therefore if it is cooler that means particles are moving slower. so by filling up your gas tank at night or when it is cooler, the atoms are closer and denser and therefore you get more per gallon than when its hot.

In my household we are avid lovers of classic automobiles. I know a lot of people are concerned with fuel economy, but in my household we are more concerned with horsepower! There are a lot of myths about how to conserve fuel. Personally in our "normal" vehicle we get 32 mpg and gas is only $2.59 a gallon, that is not near as high as last year. In our rods we average about 9 mpg and it costs from $6.49 to $8.99 per gallon. Ironically we choose to drive the rods more lol.

If you have any stations near you, watch them, prices drop on Monday and Tuesdays,
go back up on Friday mornings.

If you have a costco near you they tend to be a little cheaper than other places.

my boyfriend works at BP and has for about two years,
and he says that their gas (and he's assuming this
is an industry wide thing) has to be regulated at a
certain temperature specifically for these reasons.

heaven forbid we benefit from the oil companies losing
a penny, right? regulated gas temperature = their solution.

I also don't let the tank get past half.  Saves money because you don't spend more when you let it get to empty.
